March 2008 CPA newsletter
NEXT MEETING
Our next meeting will be held Sunday March 9h At Jim and Margaret's Hanger as outlined in the message from our President so bring something for the grill if you wish and a dish to share.
The open house to show Classical Aircraft displays will be from 10AM until 2PM for the group display along Aviation Drive and the open hangers display will continue until 4:30 PM. Plan on displaying your aircraft. This is an excellent opportunity to share with the community and to create interest in the airport and in flying, so let's all participate as much as we can.
LAST MEETING
The Corona Pilot's Association meeting was called to order by our President, Jim Nunally February 10, 2008 at 2:30 PM.
Woodrow Anselen spoke on safety and presented points that all pilots should be aware of when entering the pattern and on final approach at a non towered airport. Woodrow also had a question and answer period that members could discuss different situation that occur when landing.
Jim welcomed visitors and we had four members to join the CPA.
The minutes were read and approved.
Dennis Voll, our treasurer, gave and his report and it was approved.
Jim asked if anyone would like to Chair the Airfaire in October to see Richard.
The lift and tow is still in storage. No decision was made on how we should dispose of these items.
It was suggested that a letter would be sent to the City recommending that Woodrow Anselen has a seat on the Safety Board. A motion was made and seconded and approved the letter be sent.
John Elwell related that there may be some 8' tables for sale soon. The club authorized the purchase of 6 tables if the price is $10 each or less.
Jonah will be our Chairperson for fly outs. We are looking forward to these events.
We are in need of the Chairperson for the 4th of July parade. If you would like to head this up see Jim.
The meeting was adjourned.Good food and fellowship followed.
FROM THE PREZ
The Corona Pilots Association is really starting to gain momentum so let us make the best of it. Our February meeting had 56 in attendance and we hope for more at the March meeting. We should plan for a membership drive hamburger cookout in the next couple of months and we will have a brunch fly-out in March. You will not want to miss the March CPA program. John Pappas will tell us about a project he is involved with in having a refurbished WACO Glider land on one of the landing zones that was used at Normandy on D-DAY, 1944. As usual bring a dish to share and we will again have the grill for your steak or burger.
We had a fair showing of airplanes at the February display (25 planes) but we can do better in March. As the weather improves I think our participation will increase. Please remember that your plane does not have to qualify as an antique in order for you to park it out for display. Try to have your plane out by 10:00 if possible.
Richard is going to be the coordinator for the 2008 Airfaire (the airport will receive all the net proceeds). Richard has requested that the CPA be a sponsor (not the sole sponsor) and furnish enough funds for the Airfaire to get started. We will need to decide at the March meeting what our contribution will be to this year's event.
I would like to thank those who attended the memorial for Paul Barber, he will be missed
PilotProfile -- Wally Lucett
By Margaret Nunally
Wally was born in San Francisco, California. As a kid he used to ride a bicycle to San Francisco International Airport (via the 101 Freeway - never got caught) just to watch the planes. He could see the airport from his bedroom, so he spent a lot of time at the window with binoculars.
In 1961, Wally enlisted in the US Army serving two tours in Korea and one in Viet Nam. Wally attended college in San Francisco for two years upon his return home and in 1969 he was accepted to the California Highway Patrol Academy. Upon graduation he worked in the Santa Fe Springs, Central Los Angeles and Westminster offices. In 1974, he went to state investigations and in 1981 he joined the Orange County District Attorney's Bureau of Homicide Investigator, retiring in February 1999.
This whole time he never lost his interest in flying but circumstances did not allow him to pursue those interests. Retirement allowed him to finally get involved. Wally moved to Corona in 2000 and low and behold there was an airport. In 2003 he was referred to Chris Okwudibonye as a possible flight instructor. He met with Chris and was assured that he wasn't too old to learn. Wally started taking lessons at that time. During the process he took the medical and promptly flunked.
Wally continued to fly with Chris until we lost him. Knowing he could not get licensed was not all that important as long as he could still go up and fly once in a while. Thanks to friends at the airport, he still gets to do that. Unfortunately he waited too long to really get involved in flying but better late than never. Wally thoroughly enjoys his time at the airport and being involved with the CPA. There is a real sense of community with the folks at the airport and the shared interest in aviation allows him to be in a constant state of learning.
Wally loves being a airport groupie.
SAFETY CORNER
In light of the recent pattern accident let's occasionally review pattern procedures. The following is the core information used by Woody Anselen in his presentation at the February CPA meeting.
* "Keep your head in a swivel" Maximize your attention outside the cockpit with a "fly the airplane attitude" and careful maneuvering pilot performance.
* Fly the pattern with extreme precision.
* Exact Altitude is important to "see and be seen" as aircraft have restricted visibility.
* Be at agreed geographic locations at all pattern points is Important to assist pilots knowing where to look for traffic.
* Communicate on Unicom, frequency your location at key pattern transition points.
* Turn on all aircraft lights while in or approaching the pattern.
* Consider mild turn about a point Maneuvers while in the pattern to enhance your ability to see other traffic.
* Have wing tip strobe lights on your aircraft and have them on in the pattern.
* Establish landing configuration before entering the pattern to reduce pilot distractions in the pattern.
FOR SALE

1947 Champion 7 A-D project. Very Reasonable. Mostly all there, structurally sound. Wings and tail feathers are covered but completed several years ago. No engine with project though one is available.
Fred says he wants to keep it on the airport so he can see it when it is finished. He was going to complete it but finds himself too short of time.

We lost one of our bench-buddies last month. Paul Barber, a long time Corona Airport regular was laid to rest February 7th after a long illness. Paul was a fine mechanic and a real aviation enthusiast. He was also the consummate Marine. He will long be remembered. His services were attended by a number of CPA members who shared many fond memories of our pal Paul.

Gale Grant the current AJO icon has been hospitalized. He went in for a four way by-pass and a new heart valve, but some where along the way someone must have offered Gale a new pacemaker too. And you know our bionic man, he couldn't turn down another piece of hardware installed.
If you're keeping count Gale has installed artificial knees(both) and a shoulder, and with the above he's becoming a bionic man from Starwars.

2007 was a good year for General Aviation according to General Aviation Manufactures Association.
According to GAMA there were 4272 shipments compared to 4053 units in 2006. Business jet shipments exceeded 100 for the first time. Piston airplanes dropped 2.9 per cent in 2007 but still posted the second best year in two decades.
In spite of this Colombia Aircraft folded and Cessna picked up the pieces and we will see a low wing Cessna Single.
Adams Aircraft also declared bankruptcy just as their program was nearing completion and Silver State Helicopters who once had operations in 30 states closed their doors leaving Robinson Helicopters with 10 to 12 R22's and R44's ready for delivery and really looking for customers.

If you're planning to sell your aircraft, be aware of a new FAA rule. Effective March 31, once you sell or transfer your aircraft to a new owner, you have 21 calendar days to complete the information on the back of your registration card and return it to the FAA. The agency had proposed to set a five-day time limit, but after AOPA objected to this unrealistic requirement, the FAA adopted the 21-day rule. In addition, the FAA is also requiring that requests for new aircraft registration include typed or printed names along with signatures. The mandate is part of the FAA's Drug Enforcement Assistance Act, in which the agency is working to keep the U.S.aircraft registry up to date.

How about some help? Some of you may have noticed that Corona Air Ventures do not place a high priority on the maintenance of the restrooms at the central fueling station. Unfortunately this is the restroom used by the many outside pilots who come here for fuel. Some of our members have pitched in and helped occasionally but you can help too. After you wash your hands, take the paper towel you use to dry your hands and wipe the wash bowl. This only takes a second and it does help.
