January 2008 CPA newsletter

NEXT MEETING
Our next meeting will be held Sunday January 13th on the terrace of Corona Aero Partners at 2:30PM.  NOTE: THIS IS A CHANGE OF MEETING TIMES.

There will be a discussion of the City's flood plan there will be a report on the Airfaire and if things work out we will have a program on flying the back country in Arizona and Utah.

The open house to show Classic Aircraft , displays will be from 10AM until 2PM for the group display  along Aviation Drive PM. Plan on displaying your aircraft. This is an excellent opportunity to share with the community and to create interest in the airport and in flying, so let's all participate as much as we can.

LAST MEETING
The Corona Pilot's Association meeting  was called to order by our President, Jim Nunally December 9, 2007 at5PM.  The minutes of the November meeting were read and amended.  The amended minutes were approved and the treasurer's report was given by Dennis Voll.

Terri Keiser gave an update on the Airfaire scholarship. Pat Brunner will check on insurance concerning our liability to students. Terri will have more information in January of this concern.

The CPA has a lift and a tow in the CPA hangar. Since these items are not being used a motion was made and seconded that we sell these items.

Fred Peters presented a proposal for  the CPA to purchase 50 -60 banners to fly on the hangars of antique aircraft displayed on the 2nd Sunday of each month. The total amount will be approximately $2.500. The motion was made and approved. To pay for the banners, the CPA will sell the banners for $50 each to replace the investment.

Margaret suggested we hire Tom Dye to make a stage for the Airfaire and other functions.  The stage is made in 4X4sections, so different size stages can be used and it will be easy storage. The Airfaire paid $400.00 for a stage this year. A stage will last many years.

Jim Nunally suggested a time change for the CPA meeting of 2:30 PM instead of 5PM. the 2nd Sunday of each month. This will coincide with Aircraft Display day so our meeting will end about 4 PM. A motion was made and seconded that we approved this change for a 6 month trial beginning in January 2008.

Fred Peters spoke on the flood emergency plan.  Fred expressed his concerns as we are entering our wet season and we need to be prepared.

The CPA website is vitally important to communications on flood conditions. In its pages is real time status flood levels and important resources to find additional information on flood conditions. CPA cannot stress enough that you should be able to view the website and depend on it for real-time information should an emergency occur. Fred and John will be talking more about this at the January meeting.

The meeting was adjourned with good food and fellowship following.

FROM THE PREZ
By Jim Nunally As we come to the end of 2007 let us stand silent for a few minutes and remember all the good friends who passed from this life to a better place during the year.  Let us also think about the things that we have done during the year to promote the CPA and to plan for things to come. In 2007 we participated in the Corona 4th of July parade and I think both the CPA and the 99's did well in promoting aviation. In October we had one of the best Airfaires in recent years in spite of the fact that it rained on the day of the Airfaire. Our monthly aircraft display was moved outdoors and we have had excellent participation by our members.

Here is what I hope we can accomplish in 2008. We will triple our monthly number of aircraft on display by advertising toother airports and in aircraft publications. We will have an aircraft related swap meet in conjunction with the monthly display. We will have cars (antiques or classic) on display along with our airplanes. We will have a flight school or flight instructor present at the monthly displays to answer questions and to offer instruction to anyone interested. We will increase our membership roll by 10% and our ACTIVE member participation by at least 50%.  We will have several social events during the year (brunch fly-outs, cookouts, recovery party, etc.). Our Airfaire this year will exceed last years in all respects. These goals are all attainable with little effort if we all work together as a team (a club).

NOTE- NOTE-NOTE-
Remember our new meeting time starting in January 2008. The next CPA meeting will be January 13 at 2:30PM (instead of 5PM) and we will have an outstanding video to show, if time permits.

CORONA MUNICIPAL AIRPORT
By Rich Brodeur, Airport Manager

Now is your chance to get rid of those unwanted metal and wireitems; a Metal & Wire Only Container is located at the east end of the airport.  Please do not throw trash in this container.

Upcoming events: December 17th thru February 17th Aero Tech, Inc. will be performing an aerial hydro mulching operation onthe hillsides damaged during the recent Santiago fire.  A temporary advisory team has been set up to issue informational advisories to all pilots using our facility (Contact Unicom 122.7).  So far everything is going well and everyone involved with this operation is cooperating.  The Aero Tech, Inc. pilots have been going above and beyond to maintain our Noise Abatement & Good Neighbor policy.  The Department of Agriculture, U S Forestry has hired Western States Reclamation to coordinate the ground support operations during this hydro mulching event. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Corona Airport Community for their cooperation and support during this busy period.

Safety: none reported this month

Aircraft complaints: We have received one complaint regarding the above operation but Aero Tech, Inc. has adjusted their flight pattern to a higher altitude and moved their flight path to avoid flying over heavily populated areas.

Thefts:  None this month.   Please report any suspicious activity to your Master Lease Holder or me as soon as possible.

Insurance:  Please make sure your insurance is current and up to date and indicates The City of Corona and the Army Corps of Engineers as additionally insured.   The Master Lease Holders have been issued a copy of all non-insured aircraft andwill be taking corrective action to ensure 100% compliance to this ongoing process.  If your aircraft is not operational and does not have insurance, you must submit a Declaration of Non-Operation Status form.  Please contact your Master LeaseHolder or the Airport Manager for this form.

The Rainy Season is upon us and as a reminder, please be prepared to remove all items from your hangar within 24 hours ifwe incur a major flood event.  Remove all Hazardous materials from your hangar and seal all containers to prevent a spill. Also make certain that your aircraft is airworthy and check the Corona Pilots Association or the City's WEB site whenever weather events are forecast.

Thank you for your continued support and I hope that this Holiday Season is good to you and your family. Please help me keep our Airport Safe and Neighborly!  Thanks!!!!

NEWS YOU REALLY NEED
If you want to file  for an exemption from personal property tax on your antique or classis airplane. Remember. you must file your exemption request with the Riverside County Assessor before February 15th, 2008. Come to our meeting and learn more about this feature.

The rain season is now with us and with rain there has been flooding in the past and the City has a formal Flood plan and each member should become familiar with the details of that plan. The City of Corona has mandated that the airport be closed when floodwater from Prado backs up to the extent that water is on the runway. This requirement means that evacuation by flight will have to occur before flooding reaches the runway. The airport manager must base a decision on whether to evacuate based on existing and projected weather and water flow conditions.  Once the decision is made the Airport Manager will notify each master leaseholder who in turn will notify tenants. CPAwill provide supplemental information via e-mail and the website.

Water level information as well as actual inflow and outflow data are available from the Corps of Engineers Prado Damwebsite and the CPA website (under Resources).  Information about how to get to those site will be discussed at the January meeting and links will bedistributed by e-mail after the meeting.

It is important to remember that IF an order is issued we have twenty four hours to clear our hangers so each  person should have a plan.  The editor feels however that there will not be a threat this winter (but what does he know?) The Corps maintain Prado Lake at 494 ft MSL during the winter months and the west end of the runway is at the 517 level so it is important to remember these two numbers if you want to track what is happening for your own information.

The Red Baron Stearman squadron is being disbanded. Citing changes in the retail grocery industry, the Schwan Food Company on Dec. 3 abruptly discontinued sponsorship of the Red Baron Pizza Squadron after 28 years in order to "refocus" the RedBaron marketing program.

Director of Flight Operations Jayson Wilson said his first priority is to assist the 16 employees who supported the team's airshow performances, and then to dispose of the team's assets, including seven flyable Boeing Stearman aircraft and an additional four museum-quality Stearmans.

"It's kind of a sad day," he added. He said some of the pilots had dreamed of flying for the team since their youth. The Red Baron Squadron last visited Corona Airport in 1998 and the editor did get a ride in one fantastic Stearman. It is indeed sad to see them go.

Do you perform some of your maintenance? As an aircraft owner, it's your responsibility to maintain your aircraft in anairworthy condition. If you are an AOPA member they provide  help you identify issues to watch out for, AOPA provides easy access to the FAA's database of aviation maintenance alerts, which summarize malfunction and defect reports submitted by mechanics and aircraft owners. This is a non-regulatory mechanism the FAA has in place for sharing potentially safety-critical information based upon the service experience of others.

Aircraft owners and potential aircraft buyers are encouraged to download and review these monthly publications. They'll help you become better educated about the equipment you fly and could save you money on maintenance costs.

WHAT ABOUT AUTO GAS? If you have received a supplemental type certificate (STC) to operate your airplane using auto gas in addition to avgas, you need to be aware of the potential hazards posed by "oxygenated" fuel. Many states now require the blending of ethanol in gasoline, but not all blended auto gas is labeled, so you can't rely on information provided at the pump. Simple procedures and test kits are available to test fuel for the presence of ethanol.

For the Good of the Order
An  elderly couple had dinner at some friend's house and, after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, 'Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it  was really great. I would recommend it very highly.'

The other man said,  'What is the name of the restaurant?'

The first man thought and thought and finally said, 'What's the name of that flower you give to someone you  love? You know... The one that's red and has thorns.' 'Do you mean a  rose?' 'Yeah, that's the one,' replied the man, then turned towards the kitchen and yelled to his wife, 'Hey, Rose, what's thename of that restaurant we went to last night?'

Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, a student nurse found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn't need any help to leave the hospital. After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let the student wheel him to the elevator. On the way  down she asked him if his wife was meeting him. 'I don't know,' he said.  'She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.'
