November 2007 CPA newsletter

NEXT MEETING
Our next meeting will be held Sunday November  11th on the terrace of Corona Aero Partners at 5PM.  We will report on the Airfaire and if things work out we will have a program on flying the back country in Arizona and Utah.
The open house to show Classical Aircraft , displays will be from 10AM until 2PM for the group display  along Aviation Drive and the open hangers display will continue until 4:30 PM. There will even be Hot Dogs and soft drinks available. Plan on displaying your aircraft. This is an excellent opportunity to share with the community and to create interest in the airport and in flying, so let's all participate as much as we can.

CPA annually provides support to Wings of Faith and the Christmas season is upon us so remember to bring toys to the next two meetings. Bring small unwrapped toys. Remember they are being delivered to orphanages and other special need groups by aircraft so avoid heavy toys.

LAST MEETING
The Corona Pilot's Association meeting was called to order by our President, Jim Nunally on October 14, 2007 at 5 PM.

Minutes from the last meeting were read by Margaret Nunally and accepted.

The treasurer's report was unavailable.

Terry Keiser said she is still working on the scholarships and will have a report in November.

The Airfaire was held October 13, 2007 which was a big success. Margaret Nunally thanked the many people who gave their time and efforts and to all who volunteered in many different ways to make a great Airfaire.

Many members expressed their views on the pro and cons of the Airfaire which was appreciated. We will have an Airfaire meeting October 28, at 3 PM on the upper deck. Everyone is welcome.

We had 9 planes on display October 14, from 10AM to 2PM. Wally and Jim served hot dogs, chips and cold drinks to everyone who stopped to say hello.

New Business: A change of the time for CPA meeting was discussed which might bring more members out. This was just a suggestion. More discussion to follow.

A motion was made to have a hamburger fry for Sq. 29 of the Civil Air Patrol and for everyone who volunteered at the Airfaire. A date was not set but maybe late November after Thanksgiving.

The meeting was adjourned. Good food and fellowship followed.

FROM THE PREZ
By Jim Nunally:

The 2007 Corona Airfaire was a success, even in bad weather. We had by conservative estimates an attendance of 3000 people. The event was attended by most of the Corona city officials and at least one US Congressman. We have had good comments by all who attended and I think the event will be remembered by them next year as a MUST SEE affair.

The Airfaire is a function sponsored by the Corona Pilots Association and next year I would like to see more members participating. We need to start planning early and if possible each member should plan on being available and helping in the effort. If you would be willing to help in the 2008 Airfaire please contact Richard Brodeur at the airport manager's office.

The Airfaire could not have occurred without the help of the Civil Air Patrol and we plan to honor them with a hamburger feast in the near future. We will give notice when this will happen and everyone should come out to thank them for their efforts.

We are soliciting ideas on whether to change the CPA meeting days or times to make the meetings more accessible to more of our members. It seems that there is not a time and day that suits everyone so what we need is the day and time that suits the most. If you could contact us in person or by e-mail and give us your thoughts we would appreciate it.

Upcoming events :
Saturday October 27, 2007 City of Corona Harvest Festival will take place near the City Hall.

Hangar Inspections : The Hangar inspections have been completed and overall this was the best year for compliance. Most of the non-compliance issues were minor and I want to thank those of you who take this matter serious and are complying with the Airport guidelines.

As a reminder, please avoid storing any type of hazardous materials in your hangar and make certain that all containers are securely fastened and closed.

Recycling Procedures :

If your aircraft is not operational and does not have insurance, you must submit a Declaration of Non-Operation Status form. Please contact your Master Lease Holder or the Airport Manager for this form.
Please help me keep our Airport Safe and Neighborly! Thanks!!!!

The Corona Airfaire 2007 was a great success with an estimated attendance of about 3000 people. Great Job Margaret and Jim Nunally and to all of volunteers that helped to make this a successful day.

PILOT PROFILE OF EAA CHAPTER 494
By: Margaret Nunally

This is just a reminder to folks at the Corona Airport that we have EAA Chapter 494 on the field. Mark Beattie is the President and would like for you to come to the general meeting on the 3rd Saturday at 2 PM.

The chapter has a work day the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. Mark would welcome all CPA members to stop by, take a look and of course offer an opinion or two.

The EAA Chapter 494 was displayed at the Airfaire. Many people stopped by to say hello.

Mark believes EAA Chapters are important in promoting and protecting general aviation.

As fellow pilots, we need to be supportive of our EAA Chapter 494 on the field. We are proud to have such a fine organization.

NEWS YOU REALLY NEED

Well the Airfaire is over! The day started with a real downer. RAIN several events canceled and there was some who thought the show would not go on, but they forgot that old aviation saying; rain by seven, fly by eleven. The show did go on and we had a fair size crowd. The kids activity were busy most of the day, Mike Nolan entertained the crowd with an exciting array of information, the parachute boys were able to jump, the RC planes flew, there were airplanes on display and the Sport Plane display was well received. If you missed it we are very sorry because we certainly enjoyed the day.

The Sport Planes were well received and the vendors were happy with the turnout to explore this growing facet of General Aviation.

Cars were there too. Here is an example of what is not quite as modern as the all new Sport Planes.

Though it is mentioned above, remember to bring an unwrapped small toy for our annual drive to help Wings Of Faith bring joy to orphaned children at Christmas time. Having traveled on these trips the editor can testify to the joy received from the operators of the agencies when we arrive with a plane load of toys. You can bring toys to the next two meetings or drop them off at the Wings of Faith hanger. If neither can be found you might try the Airport Administration office.

It is time to start thinking about the personal property exemptions for aircraft over 35 years old. If your aircraft is over thirty five years old or one of a kind and if you agree to display it twelve times each year then you can receive and exemption from the personal property tax. CPA sponsors an open house display the second Sunday of each month.

Remember you must file that exemption request with the Riverside County Assessor before February 15th, 2008. Come to our meeting and learn more about this feature.

Our Members

Paul Barber, long time airplane mechanic and "Barney Bench" warmer has been hospitalized and is currently improving at Pal Terrace Care located at 11162 Palm Terrace Lane, Riverside CA 92505 (951-687-7330). As of 10/31 Paul was sitting up in a wheelchair and able to visit. More details are available on the website as well as directions to get there if you have a few minutes to say hello.

Dave Querner is returning to AJO. After the flood Dave decided to try Riverside but it is rumored that after thirty years at AJO he just could not stay away. At any rate Dave and his 180 are back. Welcome.

Pat and Susan Bruner are believers that airplanes are made to go somewhere. They just returned from a trip that included stops in Colorado Springs, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Texas and home. They report a great trip.

Ed Lovett a fairly new member who purchased a 182 about one year ago has returned from an extended trip to Florida, including a hop to the Bahamas. He reports the Cessna performed flawlessly and he gained real experience at cross country flying.

Our Neighbors at Flabob are holding their annual Veterans Day celebration Nov. 10 from 9AM until 4PM. This is always a good program including a small parade and a patriotic ceremony. The Waltham Foundation hopes that the weather will be more cooperative that it was for Chapter one open house.

More from the FAA
Pilots only have until Nov. 19 to point out flaws in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection proposal that would require general aviation pilots to submit arrival and departure notices and passenger manifests via the Internet before receiving approval to enter or leave the United States. AOPA requested an extension of the comment period and on Oct. 31, customs officially denied AOPA's request for a comment period extension, stating that a delay in the rulemaking process would allow "vulnerabilities, which threaten U.S. border security, to continue." If you plan to fly outside the continental U.S. then you should get involved in this issue.

If you are interested in the status of the FAA funding bill and user fees, Congress has only about two weeks to pass a funding bill or grant another extension. As it stands now the House has approved a bill without User fees for GA while the Senate committees have two versions. The Commerce Committee version has the $25 dollar user fee while the Finance Committee version does not. These need to be reconciled before the bill goes to the floor. An extension seems to be the most likely solution.

Are your dues for 2007-08 paid? Check to see if you have paid your current dues. Reminders will soon be in the mail so be sure to check on yours. If by some chance you have not sent your dues, mail $25 to Corona Pilot's Association PO Box 1212 Corona CA 92878-1212.
