NEXT MEETING

Our next meeting will be held Sunday September 9th on the terrace of Corona Aero Partners at 5PM.

The open house to show Classical Aircraft , displays will be from 10AM until 2PM for the group display along Aviation Drive and the open hangers display will continue until 4:30 PM. There will even be Hot Dogs and soft drinks available. Plan on displaying your aircraft. This is an excellent opportunity to share with the community and to create interest in the airport and in flying, so let's all participate as much as we can.

This is also the last general meeting before the October airfair come, and participate.

LAST MEETING

The Corona Pilot's Association meeting was called to order by our President, Jim Nunally on August 12, 2007 at 5 PM.

Minutes from the last meeting were read by Margaret Nunally and approved.

Dennis Voll, our Treasurer gave a report on our income and expenditures.

Jim Nunally thanked Margaret Nunally, Dorothe and Dennis Voll, Terry Keiser, Yolanda Anselsen and Wally Lucett for the outstanding job they did with the egg and pancake breakfast. 200 people were in attendance to bid Rose farewell.

Margaret Nunally gave an update on the Airfaire which is Saturday, October 13. We have twenty- four vendors booked but our goal is forty vendors. We are having lots of entertainment which will bring new energy to the Airfaire. Admission is Free.

Twenty-two airplanes participated in our Airplane Display. They had a few people to come by and view the planes and get acquainted with the pilots. This was our largest gathering. Our thanks go to all who came out to display their airplanes.

A motion was made and seconded to BBQ hot dogs and serve can drinks at our next Airplane Display Sept 9 at 10 AM. Lunch will begin at 11 AM. A donation bucket will be available to defray the cost.

A motion was made and seconded to purchase (2) 10 x 10 pop-up shades.

The meeting was adjourned and good food and fellowship followed.

FROM THE PREZ
By Jim Nunally:

The CPA is showing great progress in all respects except for meeting attendance on Sunday evenings. We had a very successful pancake breakfast in August as we sent Rose to Brazil and our August airplane display broke another record, with 22 airplanes on display but attendance at the monthly meeting was sparse. In the fall I know things will pick up, they always do. We had an airplane from French Valley enter our display in August, as more airports get the word out about our displays we hope to have more participation in the future. We again had several people who came by to see the airplanes and to talk about flying. At the September display we plan to serve hot dogs around noon time so come on out and join the festivities.

Be sure to tell Fred Peters that we appreciate all that he does for us at Corona. The resurfacing he did of the taxiways has added a lot to the appearance of the hangar areas. Let's all help out by keeping the area clean and free from debris.

If anyone has ideas of how to generate interest in the CPA please let us know. You can even be the chairperson of the activity you suggest.

Just a note for those who may want to display their airplanes on October 13, at the Airfaire. We will pre-assign display sites for all aircraft, vendor booths and other displays this year. The assignments will be made on September 15 so all display requests must be received before that date. If you want to be located with some other specific airplane we need to know before sites are assigned. There will be a certain number of sites reserved for fly-in airplanes but no last minute requests can be honored from Corona based aircraft. Everyone should be notified by their Master Lease Holder of this arrangement.

Please make an effort to attend the September meeting which will be at 5:00PM on September 9. This is YOUR club and we always have plenty of food and good conversation at the meetings. This will be the last meeting before the 2007 Airfaire.

CORONA MUNICIPAL AIRPORT
By Rich Brodeur, Airport Manager

Now is your chance to get rid of those unwanted metal and wire items; a Metal & Wire Only Container… is located at the east end of the airport. Please do not throw trash in this container.

Upcoming events:

Corona Airport Airfaire 2007 is fast approaching and thanks to the hard work and efforts of Terry Keiser, Margaret & Jim Nunally and Jon Wells; this year's Airfaire, looks to be on target to be one of the best events ever.

Hangar Inspections will be conducted October 16, 2007 through October 19, 2007.
Please check with your respective Master Lease Holder's for the times and dates.
Please ensure that your hangar is in order and free of hazardous materials. If you do store oil or fuel, please make certain that it is in a sealed & spill proof container.

Safety: None to report this month...Thanks!

Aircraft complaints: None reported this month…Great Job!

Hazardous Materials: Please dispose of all materials properly. You can take your oil to the east end for $1.00 per gallon or in most cases you can take it to your nearest automotive center for disposal for free. Please do not leave any oils or gasoline in open containers in your hangars. If I am not available; please do not leave oil on the ground next to the oil reclamation area, at the east end of the airport. My office phone number is (951) 736-2289… call and arrange a time to drop off your oil.  By the way, this area is under constant camera surveillance and anyone who does leave hazardous materials on the ground is subjecting themselves to severe fines. Smile you're on camera!

Changing oil outdoors it not recommended but if you do need to change oil, please ensure that best management practices are utilized to avoid EPA fines and penalties. Anyone failing to use preventive measures to avoid spills from draining onto the airport premises may be subjecting themselves to severe EPA fines and penalties and eviction from the airport. Please report all violations to your Master Lease Holder or me.

Insurance: Please make sure your insurance is current and up to date and indicates The City of Corona and the Army Corps of Engineers as additionally insured.  The Master Lease Holders have been issued a copy of all non-insured aircraft and will be taking corrective action to ensure 100% compliance to this ongoing process. If your aircraft is not operational and does not have insurance, you must submit a Declaration of Non-Operation Status form. Please contact your Master Lease Holder or the Airport Manager for this form.

Please help me keep our Airport Safe and Neighborly! Thanks!!!!

PILOT PROFILE
By Margaret Nunally

Jack Vandeman is a retired Boeing Engineer. The last project that he worked on was the C-17 some years ago. His former career is now his hobby which is rebuilding airplanes.

Interest in aviation, Jack said, "I really don't know when I have NOT been interested in aviation"

Jack soloed in a Cessna 150 at Compton Airport when it was still a dirt strip, but he doesn't remember the date. He owned a J-3 Cub at the time and couldn't find an instructor to check him out in a tail dragger; He now holds a single engine rating.

Scariest flying experience Jack has crashed three times - all engine outs. The last crash was on the Golden State Freeway in Burbank. The throttle broke. He hit a tree rather than hitting a car and ended up in a hospital with three broken ribs and one punctured lung.

Jack's family goes along with this love of flying which makes him happy.

NEWS YOU REALLY NEED

Everyone should remember that the airfaire is coming October 13th. We will need all to participate. This is a fun day for all, even family members. Let's put our planes on display and enjoy the day. If you are willing CPA needs help during the day but if you cannot help come and enjoy the day. Remember, if you want to display your aircraft be sure to inform CPA by Sept. 15.

SAD NEWS: Since the last newsletter we have lost one of our long time members. Don Johnson who was an active member and the owner of several projects. Done had a Cub and knew how to fly it. He was born in Oklahoma (Kingfisher, we believe) and spent many years in California and on the Corona airport. Our condolences to Sue, and to Don's family.

Have you been to the bench in the last month? If not you should see what has happened. The bench has been re done and dedicated to the memory of our friend Barney Starr. This is very appropriate since Barney was a fixture there. It is beautiful but we still miss the presence of our Barney.

The following has been received from John and Betty Pappas the founders of Dreamflight. It is not timely but there is much information to be shared with the entire membership. The Rose will be missed but John and Betty will still be around.

DreamFlight is proud to announce that their Douglas DC-3 'Rose' has been purchased by The Boeing Company. This historic aircraft will be gifted to the "Wings of A Dream Museum" (Asas de um Sonho) www.museumtam.com.br located at Sao Carlos, Brazil.

This beautiful DC-3 named 'Rose' has been operated by DreamFlight at Corona Airport, Corona, California for the past ten (10) years. Featured in numerous television, movie and print articles, 'Rose' has been a favorite at hundreds of air shows, tours and events while representing DreamFlight. Her last appearance was on the History Channel Series "Our Generation - Come Fly With Me" featured in June 2007.

'Rose' began service as a C-53 SkyTrooper with the USAAF and participated by dropping paratroopers on D-Day, 1944. Following her military duties, 'Rose' flew for Pan American World Airways on their Panagra Central and South American routes, flying in Brazil among other places. Corporate, commuter airlines and other endeavors filled the middle years of 'Rose's flying career.

The Boeing Company is a proud sponsor of the "Wings of a Dream" Museum by contributing this historic aircraft to further the museum's goals.

" The main commitment with the "Wings of A Dream" Museum is the preservation and salvation of aviation history, valuing the historical facts, the pilots actions, as well as that of constructors, designers, and mechanics alike, offering new generations accurate and detailed information as well as portraying the importance of this activity for the development of our civilization. While awakening the aviation vocation in young people and students." Per Joao Francisco Amaro, President of EDUCAM (Education, Assistance and Cultural Institute), a humanitarian and nonprofit organization, maintained by TAM and responsible for the construction of the museum.

'Rose' will leave Corona Airport on August 4, 2007 for her new home at Sao Carlos. All are invited to come early for a pancake breakfast and send-off for this historic aircraft.

For more information, please contact John or Betty Pappas at the above numbers.

Hello to all ~ just a quick message to all of our friends who have responded with messages and very, very kind words about our beautiful 'Rose' and DreamFlight. Because of the shortness of time and our doing the last minute things that always come up, I won't have time to respond to each of you individually at this time. I promise a response upon our return.

We have received - literally - hundreds of great 'send-off' messages and requests for the DreamFlight Polo shirts/caps. Again, Betty and I do not have time to respond and get the Polo's sent out before we leave. Please DO NOT send any money at this time. We will get addresses and send the Polo's as soon as we return from Brazil - it will give Betty something to do since we won't have 'Rose' anymore !! <g> If you are at Corona tomorrow morning, you can pick up a Polo/cap/postcard(s) at that time.

Again, our very 'Best' to each of you. You have made our DreamFlight experience one of the most enjoyable periods of our lives.

Best … John & Betty

This week, I heard the Army Corps of Engineers extended their lease on the land occupied by our airport for 20 additional years.

Not withstanding the "90-day-closure" clause, this means AJO can continue as an airport til the year 2037. Previously, the lease ended in 2017.

**The "90-day-closure" clause says that the ACoE can choose to close the airport at any time. And the Master Lease Holders must mitigate the land back to it's original state...remove all hangars and etc...within the 90 days.

The following is reprinted from AOPA sources and is important for all Southern California airports
- - - - - - -
Despite strong opposition from local pilots and AOPA, a bill that could open the door for operations restrictions or even airport closure at Santa Monica Municipal passed the California Assembly Tuesday. The bill, now before the state Senate, would require the California Air Resources Board to collect taxi and idle times of jets and turboprops for one year. "While we were successful in defeating this measure last year, the threat keeps coming back," said Greg Pecoraro, AOPA vice president of regional affairs. "This is a case that could spread to other airports throughout the state, so we need the voices of all California pilots to put this threat to rest for good."
