NEXT MEETING

Our next meeting will be held Sunday May 20th on the terrace of Corona Aero Partners at 5PM. NOTE -- This is a change of the usual time . The meeting has been move to the third Sunday because the normal day falls on Mothers Day. Be sure to bring a dish to share, a happy face and a desire to explore aviation. The open house to show Classical Aircraft has a new twist, so be sure to read further in this newsletter. Plan on showing your aircraft.

LAST MEETING

The Corona Pilot's Association meeting was called or order by our President, Paul Bricker somewhere near 5 PM with a number of exited aviation enthusiasts on hand to enjoy the festivities.

Jim Nunally reported on the Antique Aircraft Display which took place earlier in the day with 15 planes participating.

Jon Wells presented Fred Peters an award of service from the Angel Flight West. Jon also gave Fred mementos from the organization. 11 missions have been completed by Angel Flight West and Jon spoke on services to others that the organization gives.

Terry Keiser gave an update on the Scholarship for a student interested in flying. The Scholarship Committee will be meeting in one week to consider ideas and guidelines for the next recipient.

Paul Bricker, 4th of July parade Chairman, spoke on the small walk planes that are in need of repair. The parade entries last year were well received and we want to make a showing at least as strong as last year.

Fred Peters reminded members of the Ferrari Club Drive-out Luncheon, Sunday, May 6, 2007 (10AM - 3PM), catered home-style Mexican luncheon $10.00 per person. For tickets call Fred Peters (714) 633-6817.

Dorothe Balija reminded members at the next meeting, May 20. to arrive at 4:30 PM to help with the billing of dues of our members. If lots of folks show up the work will go quickly.

Dennis Voll (our Treasurer) will prepare a statement each month so all members are welcome to look at all transactions that have taken place for that month.

Richard Brodeur (our Airport Manager) reminded members all gate cards must be renewed shortly,

Paul Bricker made a motion that Richard Brodeur check with the city regarding Insurance to cover the Antique Aircraft display. Motion seconded and approved.

A film was shown on Safely Measures when the airplane engine stops.

The meeting was adjourned and good fellowship and food was enjoyed by all.

FROM THE PREZ

By Jim Nunnaly
As the first item in the first "Message from the President", I wish to give a big heart felt thanks to those who have served so well in the past. I know that a lot of time and effort are required to perform the duties of each position on the board. Those willing to serve and to serve multiple terms are to be highly commended.

We need to re-activate the presently dormant members and also increase our total membership in the coming year. I believe one way to do this is to get members more actively involved in the organization. On April 15 we had 15 members actively participating in the airplane display. This may not appear to be worth mentioning but when was the last time the CPA had 15 members participating in anything.

Paul Bricker initiated the monthly airplane display and I think it is going to be a good public relations tool for the CPA to use. We had a good turnout on April 15th with fifteen (15) airplanes on display. Those showing their airplane were Gale Grant, Bill Strother, Adrian Harvey, Jon Wells, Lon Cooper, Nabil Wareh, George Thomas, Sol Olynger, Cliff Case, Dan Haddix, Martin Benson (2), Margaret Nunally, Jimmie Nunally, and the owner of Bonanza N5272C whose name I did not get. The day was sort of ratty and we had to close down at noon due to wind and sprinkles but everyone was energetic and enthusiastic. I will not be here in May but I want everyone who owns an airplane (old or new) to put it on display the third Sunday, May 20 (second Sunday in May is Mothers Day). When we get organized on the monthly display, we will advertise to the surrounding airports for outside participation and we will place notices in the local media so local residents will come out to see our toys.

I would like for the CPA to have one function every three months. Some would be a social event for the members as well as to target the non-CPA members on the airport and act as a membership drive, i.e. hamburger/hot dog cookout or maybe a hanger dance. Maybe we could have something the end of June. Other functions could act an airport PR event, i.e. scouting or aero club functions or sponsoring car club meetings or open air public concerts

These are all just ideas that may or may not be workable but I would like everyone to please think about things we can do to make life at the Corona Airport lively and pleasant.

CORONA MUNICIPAL AIRPORT

By Rich Brodeur, Airport Manager
Now is your chance to get rid of those unwanted metal and wire items; a Metal & Wire Only Container… is located at the east end of the airport. Please do not throw trash in this container.

Upcoming events: May 6, 2007- Ferrari Club event fro 10 AM - 3 PM Fred Peter's Runway Deck. $10.00 lunch fee, all are welcome. Contact Susan Bruner or Fred for more information.

Safety: None to report this month...Thanks!

Aircraft complaints: None this month; Thanks!

Hazardous Materials: The rainy season is upon us… it is very important that everyone does their part, to minimize the potential for hazardous material spills and contamination. Please dispose of all materials properly. You can take your oil to the east end for $1.00 per gallon or in most cases you can take it to your nearest automotive center for disposal for free. Please do not leave any oils or gasoline in open containers in your hangars. If I am not available; please do not leave oil on the ground next to the oil reclamation area, at the east end of the airport. My office phone numbers is (951) 736-2289… call and arrange a time to drop off your oil. By the way, this area is under constant camera surveillance and anyone who does leave hazardous materials on the ground is subjecting themselves to severe fines. Smile you're on camera!

Insurance: Please make sure your insurance is current and up to date and indicates The City of Corona and the Army Corps of Engineers as additionally insured. The Master Lease Holders have been issued a copy of all non-insured aircraft and will be taking corrective action to ensure 100% compliance to this ongoing process. If your aircraft is not operational and does not have insurance, you must submit a Declaration of Non-Operation Status form. Please contact your Master Lease Holder or the Airport Manager for this form.

The City Parks & Community Services Department of which Corona Municipal is a part of; has requested the Army Corps of Engineers to extend its lease to 2037. As soon as I receive the official written response, I will pass it along to you.

Please help me keep our Airport Safe and Neighborly! Thanks!!!!

Rich Brodeur

PILOT PROFILE

Pilot's Profile - Obby Agins
(Told to Margaret Nunally by Annie)

Need an opinion? Need some advice? Looking for answers? THIS IS YOUR LUCKY DAY!!! Uneducated opinions on any subject of your choice. Free advice for what it is worth.

My name is Annie. You can meet my master Obby at the Bench (He is the one with all the answers, he is waiting for a call from George W. Bush). I'm a beautiful black Lab (that is my opinion). If you don't like our opinions DON'T SIT ON THE BENCH!!!

Obby has had an interest in flying a long as he can remember. His interest began showing itself by building model airplanes. In 1946 Obby soloed at Riverside in a J3 Cub and has maintained a strong interest in tail draggers during his entire flying career. He holds a single-engine rating.

Planes he has owned: Aeronca, Luscombe, Cessnas 140, 150, 172, 182, and 210.

His favorite place to fly is the pattern and the place he most wants to fly would be Alaska, again.

I like hanging out with my Pals at the bench. Stop by and say hello to Obby and bring me a treat.

Annie

NEWS YOU REALLY NEED

Saturday April 28th was a big day for the Corona Airport and for the CPA. That was the day that our Vice President and our Treasurer completed their merger and became one. There was a big reception at the airport attended by approximately 200 aviation enthusiasts and Dorothe's fellow educators. Congratulations to the happy couple and we hope that they have a blissful life together as one of a very few -two airplane- families [brings a whole new meaning to his-n-hers...Ed.].

The FAA is considering extending the duration of medical certificates. Third class certificates for pilots under forty years of age would go to five years and first class would go to one year. Second class and those over forty would not be affected. AOPA is watching.

Our new president Jim will not be here for his first meeting but he has a good excuse. The Nunallys are flying Old Black Magic to South Carolina and Arkansas. Now that is what family airplanes are for. Good Luck

The Following item appeared on the Corona Pilots Association Bulletin Board and it is too good to not be shared by those who do not have a computer. See what you miss if you don't visit the web site ?

HOW MANY OF THE FOLLOWING AIRPORTS DO YOU REMEMBER ?
Read on and see what Gale Grant has to say :

Every so often the subject of old airports comes up - those now closed and some long gone. I wrote about this subject 10 or so years ago and I have again reviewed my log-books to form a new list for the CPA. I flew a pick-up/delivery service for a parachute packing Co. that I was involved with in the Forties & Fifties, which helped add to my list of fields visited. By reaching out of the basin a little, I count 46 fields on this list, and they are:

The American Aviation Historical Society (AAHS) received a phone call from David Reyes, a journalist for the LA Times. He said the contractors who are demolishing the El Toro facilities find items left by former Marine personnel, notably papers, recipes?, and other small memorabilia and he was hoping to talk to any former Marine personnel stationed at El Toro to see if they have any info on any of these items. I informed him that the 3rd Marine Air Wing Museum had moved to Miramar, but if any of you have any story that might add to the items they have found he would certainly appreciate hearing from you. One item found was a large oil painting of the flag raising on Iwo Jima. You can contact him at 714-564-1049.
