MARCH 2007 CPA Newsletter
NEXT MEETING
Our next meeting will be held Sunday February 11thth on the terrace of Corona Aero Partners at 5PM. Be sure to bring a dish to share, a happy face and a desire to explore aviation. President Paul plans to show the second part of documentary production "16R" This is a great history of Van Nuys airport and of Southern California Aviation.
Hopefully we will have nominations for officers for the coming year. There is important information in this newsletter on that subject. Read it, ponder it and help us find people willing to spend some time in leadership.
The open house to show Classical Aircraft has a new twist, so be sure to read further in this newsletter. Plan on showing you aircraft.
LAST MEETING
February is in the middle of the winter but there were at least twenty members who wanted to share the joy of aviation with their contemporary friends and to share a fine pot luck meal.
President Paul reported to the members that Pat Bruner chair of the nominating committee was having difficulty finding members who would be willing to serve in a leadership capacity for the next year. He issued a plea for members who would be willing to serve in any capacity to contact Pat or any existing officer, and let them know.
Margaret Nunnaly reported on the recovery party held at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim. There were only forty eight members that attended the event. Several members had bought tickets but for a variety of reasons did not attend. This event was not a financial success and the club lost money this year. A more complete report will be forthcoming. Those who attended all agreed that the event was very well done, the food was excellent and the music was very good.
Teri Keiser reported on activities of the Scholarship Committee and stated that there may be recommendations for the next meeting.
Jim Nunnaly reported that there were too many raindrops to hold the first Morning aircraft display Sunday. He reported the group will be ready for next month. President Paul provided an interesting program, a CD entitled Runway 16. the story of Van Nuys airport along with interesting fact showing the importance of a General Aviation Airport. The Video was too long for one evening so it will be continued at the March meeting.
CORONA MUNICIPAL AIRPORT
By Rich Brodeur, Airport Manager
Now is your chance to get rid of those unwanted metal and wire items; a Metal & Wire Only Container… is located at the east end of the airport. Please do not throw trash in this container.
Upcoming events: Sunday March 4, 2007 Antique and Classic Car Show 9 am to 3 pm. This event will take place on the South Grass area. Vendors, food and bouncers for the young and young at heart will be on hand. Rain or Shine!
Safety: Recently, there have been several aircraft incidents. Fortunately, they were non-injury related. On one occasion, the Bench guys actually prevented a gear-up incident…Great Job guys!!! Thanks for looking out for the Safety of your fellow pilots and the airport.
Aircraft complaints: One this month>>>>Sunday February 18, 2007…Received a phone call message stating that a white Cessna was observed playing chicken with a yellow bi-plane over Citrus High School and they almost collided. I am awaiting a phone call from this caller to obtain aircraft numbers. I am hoping that these aircraft were not based out of Corona. Needless to say this is not the type of publicity that our airport needs.
Hazardous Materials: The rainy season is upon us… it is very important that everyone does their part, to minimize the potential for hazardous material spills and contamination. Please dispose of all materials properly. You can take your oil to the east end for $1.00 per gallon or in most cases you can take it to your nearest automotive center for disposal for free. Please do not leave any oils or gasoline in open containers in your hangars. If I am not available; please do not leave oil on the ground next to the oil reclamation area, at the east end of the airport. My office phone numbers is (951) 736-2289… call and arrange a time to drop off your oil. By the way, this area is under constant camera surveillance and anyone who does leave hazardous materials on the ground is subjecting themselves to severe fines. Smile your on camera!
Insurance: Please make sure your insurance is current and up to date and indicates The City of Corona and the Army Corps of Engineers as additionally insured. The Master Lease Holders have been issued a copy of all non-insured aircraft and will be taking corrective action to ensure 100% compliance to this ongoing process. If your aircraft is not operational and does not have insurance, you must submit a Declaration of Non-Operation Status form. Please contact your Master Lease Holder or the Airport Manager for this form.
As many of you are aware, my daughter Melissa passed away on January 14, 2007. Needless to say, this has been a very difficult time for my family. The one thing that has really helped us through this ordeal was and is the outpouring of support and love from our second family at Corona Municipal Airport.
You are forever in our hearts and we will never forget the kindness and support you have demonstrated during our time of sorrow.
Please help me keep our Airport Safe and Neighborly! Thanks!!!
FROM THE PREZ
By Paul Bricker
Looking back over the two years since "the great flood" I have been reflecting on the changes in the CPA. On the positive side, the association is on a sound financial basis, with sufficient funds to cover our commitments. We have taken the desire for a youth scholarship program to reality. We funded our initial scholarship and are soon to announce the program for 2007. We are now on a second generation of the Web site that provides a focal for communication for association members. Our relations with the City of Corona have improved, partly due to a concerted effort to reach out the City via the Air Faire, participation in the Corona 4th of July parade and establishment of a monthly open house. The Air Faire has made money in both of the last two years, and this year it appears we have gotten the jump on planning and execution that we've always just talked about in the past.
Less positive is a general stagnation in the number of members in the Association, and continued problem with a very limited number of the members providing the majority of the effort in running the association. At the January meeting I announced the majority of the board had served for multiple years and would not be running for reelection this year. Elections for new officers have been scheduled for the March 11 meeting, with new officers being installed in April. Pat Brunner agreed to head the nomination search, and Sol put a feature on the Web site to allow you to nominate officers. The results have been what I can only think of as dismal. It appears you are willing to let others run the association, as essentially no one who has been approached has said they are willing to serve a term as an officer. If there are not sufficient people willing to run the association then it will not continue to exist. Being an officer is not a hard job, but it is not a job for life. If people do not find the advantages of being part of an advocate organization for aviation at Corona sufficiently compelling to volunteer some of their time then it will go away. I find this to be a sad situation, but I also recognize that it is not the responsibility of a few people to prop up the CPA. If you don't help it may cease to exist. If the focus of the CPA today is not what you want to see then get involved and steer it a direction more suited to your vision.
We have had precious little rain over the last few months, but naturally some of what we did get arrived just in time to disrupt our first monthly open house. We will try again in March on Sunday, 3/11, from 10 am to 2 pm. Jim Nunally has coordinated with Rich Brodeur use of the SW corner of the public tie down area for the display. Walkways will be formed using flag lines to allow the public to see the aircraft but still be just outside "touch range". We will also have at least one member there at all times to marshal the area and answer questions. Please show your aircraft, or just come out to help.
The recovery party was held on 2/10 at the Phoenix club in Anaheim. The food and band were great, but attendance was not sufficient to cover the minimum attendance requirements. We will probably need to revisit the general style of the celebration, and whether to continue having the Recovery party.
The March meeting will be at the usual time (5 pm on 2/11). Elections are scheduled, and I intend to show the remainder of the documentary production "16R". The first half was very interesting and if you haven't seen it this is your opportunity.
PILOT PROFILE

Pilot Profile of Jimmie Nunally
An hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight - Leviticus 26:8
My life's journey has taken me from my small hometown of Paragould, Ark. to the Beeriest of Munich, Germany to the great Buddha of Japan. After serving 8 years in the Air Force (in photo mapping) civilian life was beckoning
Riverside, Ca was the town we requested after joining the CHP. California Baptist University played a part in that decision. I received a BS degree in Math and Business. Margaret was employed in the Vice President's for Development Department for 5 years. Their son, Patrick grew up to receive a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering. In 1992 Patrick received an award in Washington, D.C as the Most Outstanding Young Engineer in the U.S. President Bill Clinton gave him this award.
Jim served 27 years in the CHP and finally had the time for flight. Finally in 1996 he bought a 1973 Beech Musketeer and earned a private pilot certificate. After two cross country trips to Arkansas, he realized a bigger plane would be more comfortable if the long trips were to continue. In 1998 he bought a Piper Apache/Geronimo and earned his twin rating. In 2004 he was certified to fly IFR. He has had two unpleasant experiences in his flying. One time at 8500 feet over Texas my Musketeer engine stopped because he had forgot to switch fuel tanks, allowing one tank to run dry. He switched the tanks over and the engine started, the flight was completed uneventful. Another time he lost the oil from one of the engines of the Apache causing an engine shutdown over Lake Matthews. Just like he knew what he was doing he made a perfect single engine landing at Corona Also he has a Cessna 172 that Margaret flies.
Jim and Margaret fly to Columbia, S.C and Paragould, Ark twice a year in the Apache.
Flight was a dream come true. Taken off is the second thrill in life. Landing is the first.

EDITORIAL COMMENT
Elsewhere in this newsletter are pleas for someone to participate in the leadership of this organization. Under the able and strong leadership of Dave Kula the organization really took off we have had a number of great events such as BBQs, fly outs, airefaires and representations to the City of Corona about the operation of the airport. Now we stand at the crossroads and we need one or two members who are willing to spend a limited amount of time to lead the organization and to make aviation better and more usable for our whole flying community. Leadership is fun, I have done it and do not regret the effort at all. I spent four years in major positions on the board, I have represented the association at the Airport Managers Master Leaseholder meetings for eight years and have done the newsletter for five years.
Anyone interested in serving on the CPA Board, or wishing to nominate a member for a position on the board (after clearing it with the person that they are interested in serving!), please contact Pat Brunner via either email on the CPA website or via the CPA Post Box 1212, Corona, CA 92878. You may also contact him in person on the field or calling him directly. Because this notice goes web-wide, we are not posting his home number here. Please get your nominations in early, as voting take place in April this year!
Overheard in IFR Magazine's "On the Air"
This comes from a search and rescue pilot at Canadian Forces Base in Bagotville, Quebec. It happened late one night during bad weather, as heard over the tower radio:
Helicopter pilot: Roger, I'm holding at 3,000 feet over the beacon.
Second voice: (Panic in voice) No, you can't be doing that...I'm holding at 3,000 feet over that beacon.
Helicopter pilot: (Short pause) You idiot, you're my copilot.

Our new member Ed Lovett and his lady.
This page shows what a good time we all had who attended this party. See how happy they are, see how great the decorations are, the food was great, the music was jumping and I hope those who view this have a glimpse of what they missed.
