JANUARY 2007

NEXT MEETING

Our next meeting will be held Sunday January 14thth on the terrace of Corona Aero Partners at 5PM. Be sure to bring a dish to share, a happy face and a desire to explore aviation. Fred Peters will continue his presentation of emergency flying or what to do when everything goes wrong.

The open house to show Classical Aircraft is, as usual, scheduled for the afternoon from 1 PM until meeting time, so plan to show your airplane.

LAST MEETING

President Paul called the December meeting to order with a small but interested group in attendance. The visitors kept coming so we had around 25 good members in attendance by the time the meeting really got underway.

A report was given on the Recovery Party/dinner dance to be held February 10th at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim. This is the same location as last year. The deadline for purchasing tickets is February 3rd,the cost is $50 per person which includes dinner and the funds to hire the band for the dance. No tickets will be sold at the door so get them early from Margaret Nunnaly, Bob Heer or Rich Broduer.

A major discussion was held concerning a voluntary  show day for classis and antique aircraft. Jim Nunnaly was authorized to sign verification papers for the display.

A discussion was held concerning CPA student scholarships. Terri Keiser will head a committee to make recommendations for the 2007 year. A report will be made at a future meeting.

Consideration was given to whether or not CPA should consider a membership in the Chamber of Commerce. President Paul agreed to learn more about the cost and benefits for consideration at a later  meeting.

Pat Bruner was authorized to purchase a new BBQ for CPA use. After the meeting there was plenty of food and a good deal of hanger flying. To those who miss these meetings you are left out of all this great conversation.

CORONA MUNICIPAL AIRPORT

By Rich Brodeur, Airport Manager
Events: No major events this month.

Now is your chance to get rid of those unwanted metal and wire items; a Metal & Wire Only Container… is located at the east end of the airport.  Please do not throw trash in this container.

Upcoming events: Memorial for Les Van Meter January 6, 2007 at 11:30 am on the deck.  Come celebrate his life.

I recently met with the City Public Works Department and the Army Corps of Engineers to discuss the construction of a haul road which is scheduled to begin in March 2007.
This road should pose minimal disruption to the airport during its initial construction and once in place will serve as an emergency evacuation route for non-airworthy aircraft during a major flood event.  This issue is tentatively scheduled for a public meeting sometime in February 2007.  I will notify each of the Master Lease Holders once the public meeting date is confirmed.

Safety:  High Winds are not uncommon at Corona Airport, so please make sure that all aircraft located in outside tie down spaces are properly secured.

Aircraft complaints:  None this month>>>>THANKS!!!!!!!

Hazardous Materials:  The rainy season is upon us… it is very important that everyone does their part, to minimize the potential for hazardous material spills and contamination.
Please dispose of all materials properly.  You can take your oil to the east end for $1.00 per gallon or in most cases you can take it to your nearest automotive center for disposal for free.  Please do not leave any oils or gasoline in open containers in your hangars.  If I am not available; please do not leave oil on the ground next to the oil reclamation area, at the east end of the airport. My office phone numbers is (951) 736-2289… call and arrange a time to drop off your oil.   By the way, this area is under constant camera surveillance and anyone who does leave hazardous materials on the ground is subjecting themselves to severe fines.  Smile your on camera!

Insurance:  Please make sure your insurance is current and up to date and indicates The City of Corona and the Army Corps of Engineers as additionally insured.   The Master Lease Holders have been issued a copy of all non-insured aircraft and will be taking corrective action to ensure 100% compliance to this ongoing process.  If your aircraft is not operational and does not have insurance, you must submit a Declaration of Non-Operation Status form.  Please contact your Master Lease Holder or the Airport Manager for this form.

As some of you are aware, for the past 2 and ½ years, I have been working to obtain an exchange of services agreement with a nursery company.  Unfortunately, 2 days before the bids closed; the nursery company withdrew his offer.  I will continue to research other methods to reduce expenses and make the airport self-sufficient.

Please help me keep our Airport Safe and Neighborly!  Thanks!!!!

PILOT PROFILE

By Margaret Nunally

Mark Awad is our newest CPA member.  Mark was born in Southern California and currently lives in Dana Point with his wife Camille and his son Sebastian who is 15 months old (they also have another one on the way).  Camille (his wife) is Australian and they feel very lucky to have roots in two wonderful countries.

Mark is a graduate of the University of San Diego.  He and a friend opened  a business in 1995 (Transpace Technology).  They are distributors of board-level electronic components.  They have just moved into a new office in
Irvine.

In 2000, Mark started taking flying lessons.  Immediately after earning his private he took basic aerobatics and tailwheel course.  There's a great warbirds community in Australia and over the course of a few visits to Melbourne he became familiar with the Commonwealth Aircraft Corp. CA-25 Winjeel, which is an Australian-designed and built Air Force trainer that was in service from 1955 until the last few were retired in 1994.  They built 62, and of those about 24 are currently airworthy.  In '04 Mark was offered the opportunity to buy one as a project.  It was restored down in Australia, shipped up here.  Now it is the first and only Winjeel in the Northern Hemisphere!!  Mark loves it because it's fully aerobatic, is reasonable easy and fun to fly and maintain, and is unique.  He is looking forward to getting it out on the airshow circuit in 2007.

Mark received his instrument rating and is working on his commercial ticket at this time.  He hopes to get a glider rating as well in the next couple of years.  For the future, he really wants to continue enjoying the Winjeel, and hopes that his experience in it will open doors to opportunities flying other warbirds as well!!

He really enjoys the community and camaraderie at Corona and he feels lucky to have found a home for the Winjeel.
Please feel free to stop by and say hello anytime his hangar doors are open.

NEWS YOU --REALLY-- NEED

By John Elwell

There's a new CPA "Online Bulletin-Board". Please go to the new website, read a few suggestions, and Register to the Bulletin-board. Here, we can keep each other advised on the daily happenings at the airport.
Please jump-in and contribute to the "Online-Bench-Talk". Presently, there are no postings about an airport flood. But in the future, this is where you'll find the daily updates. In our own words, to each other.

For those of you who can read your monthly newsletter online, here's the place, and there's a Calendar function. If you want to add birthdays, please do.

We are at the beginning of a new year and for those who receive the personal Property
Tax exemption for classic and antique airplanes it is time to file your exemption papers for the coming year. If your aircraft is 35 years old or older and if you show the aircraft publicly twelve times each year then you may be exempt from the personal property tax on the plane. You have to file for the exemption each year before February 15th  at your County Assessors office. The CPA sponsors a Number of open houses  during the year We presently conduct a display day the second Sunday of each ,month preceding our regular meeting from one PM until five PM. Beginning in February There will be a Sunday Open House which will be promoted through out the community. Under this program owners will be asked to bring their aircraft to a designated location and to display them. This will take place from 9 AM until 3 PM. Jim Nunnaly has been designated as the event coordinator and as such can sign display exemption. This is an important program to promote our airport and your participation is encouraged. Full details will be given at the January meeting and in the next newsletter.

Web Site Plagiarism;

The following items have been posted as news on the web site. AS you will note they are somewhat old but if you had gained access to the site and read the bulletin board you would be up to date. Let's make use of this great asset for our association.

1.  There will be a memorial service for Les Van Meter  January 6th on the terrace.    It was brought to our attention that we failed to do a memorial service for Harry Hubbel, who had been ill for some time and died a couple of months ago.  His memorial will be done in tandem with Les Van Meter's service this coming Saturday, January 6, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. on the Runway Terrace.  Pot luck luncheon (please bring something to share) and missing man fly-by, weather permitting.
2. It is said Obbie fell, broke his shoulder, skinned himself up. So looks like he and "Annie will have limited activity. though Obbie is at least back around the Hanger.
3. Meta came through her surgery very well on December 13th.  She was diagnosed with kidney cancer and the cancer was encapsulated in the one kidney.  Removal of the kidney and she is much better!  They told her she will live to a ripe age of 90!  No doubt she got it in writing and will hold them to it!  She was moved out of ICU and returned home about a week later.  Send cards and letters to her, or drop them off at the Cafe for Bob to take home.  She will appreciate any and all thoughts.  Way to go META!!!

HUMOR

WHY I WANT TO BE A PILOT

When I grow up I want to be a pilot because it's a fun job and easy to do. That's why there are so many pilots flying around these days. Pilots don't need much school; they really just have to learn to read numbers so they can read instruments. I guess they should be able to read a road map too, so they can find their way if they get lost.. Pilots should be brave so they won't get scared if it's foggy and they can't see, or if a wing or motor falls off they should stay calm so they'll know what to do. Pilots should have good eyes to see through clouds, and they can't be afraid of thunder or lightning because they are much closer to them than we are. The salary pilot's make is another thing I like. They make more money than they know what to do with. This is because most people think that plane flying is dangerous, except that pilots they know how easy it is. I hope I don't get airsick---- cause then I couldn't be a pilot and then I would have to go to work.
