CORONA PILOTS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

President Paul Bricker
V. President Shane Reichardt
Secretary Margaret Nunnaly
Treasurer Susan Brunner
Editor John Elwell

NEXT MEETING

Our next meeting will be held Sunday November 12th on the terrace of Corona Aero Partners at 5PM.  By this time of year the weather should be great and we can expect a very pleasant evening. Be sure to bring a dish to share, a happy face and a desire to explore aviation. Fred Peters will continue his presentation of emergency flying or what to do when everything goes wrong.

The open house to show Classical Aircraft is, as usual, scheduled for the afternoon from 1 PM until meeting time, so plan to show your airplane.

LAST MEETING

Beth Brannigan gave a preliminary report on the Airefaire festivities held October 7th. Attendance was lower than last year but The Association did not lose money on this year's event. Beth thanked the workers that put the program together and helped during the day.
President Paul stated that there would be a breakout meeting soon and a full report would be given at the next meeting.

Fred Peters continued his discussion concerning emergency procedures, especially on take off. He led a spirited discussion about best glide angle speed and minimum sink speed and the effect that wind would have on a decision to try to turn back to the airport.
Most important is the critical ides that the pilot MUST know the airplane and what it can do. He recommended that we all go to a practice area, slow the aircraft to nearly stall speed and make a power off 180 degree turn and see how much altitude you lose in that turn. With this knowledge you should then make a decision on every take off how high you have to be in order to return to the airport if you lose power on climb out.

FROM THE PREZ

By Paul Bricker

For all of you that worked so hard on the Air Faire, or just attended and enjoyed, I'd like to extend my thanks. Specifically to Beth Brannigan and Rich Brodeur we owe a "well done". If you hadn't heard, 10 days before the Air Faire Beth had to have Gall Bladder surgery. Needless to say, concern was soon followed by panic, and a call to help fill in what we thought would be a huge void, as Beth had almost single-handedly coordinated the event this year. While many stepped in to help, barely a week after surgery Beth was on the airport, pulling the Air Faire together. Friday evening she was out walking the tie down area, marking out booth space, and she was everywhere on Saturday (Don't tell her doctor). Clearly she is much tougher than I am.

We had several new vendors and exhibits this year, and the Hot Air Balloons (we had two this year) were full up until they burnt all of the 95 gallons of Propane they brought.

We are having an Air Faire "lessons learned" on Saturday, 11/4 at 8 am. If you came to the Air Faire, or if you didn't but still want to contribute, you are encouraged to attend. We will discuss what worked well, what could have gone better, and what we should do for next year. Beth has agreed to chair the event next year, with Margaret Nunally as co-chair. Have leaders already set a year in advance is a terrific start for a great Air Faire.

The new web site continues to grow, with new features added regularly. I encourage you to check it out (www.coronapilots.com).  The transition will continue for several more months, but we are still soliciting requests for additions members would like to see on the site. Just send an email to any or all of the officers and we will pass it on. Once again I would like to again thank Shane Reichardt for his fine work over the past year and a half on the original site, and Sol Olynger for his work on the new site.

Tickets for the CPA recovery party are on sale. It will be held next February at the Phoenix Club. Last year was the first year at the Phoenix club, and all reports were very positive. Come and see your fellow pilots dressed in something other than old jeans and tee shirts, enjoy a great meal, and ask your significant other (or whomever!) for a dance.

On a somber note, the memorial service for our friend Chris Okwuyebonye was held the week after the Air Faire. It was sad to say goodbye again, and we had the chance to meet many of his friends and family. The word didn't get to many who would have liked to attend. I would recommend you register on the CPA Bulletin Board. This will provide a convenient and quick way to get information disseminated to CPA members.

Our next meeting is 11/12, in the usual location. Please come and participate in the business meeting and eat and hanger fly with your friends. You can continue the "downwind turn" discussions with Fred!

and last but not least, Beth Brannigan, our Chairman of the Corona Airport 2006 Airfaire.

October 20, 2006 - A group of senior citizens hosted by the City of Corona toured Corona Municipal Airport.  The highlight of the tour was cruising around the airport and being able to go onboard ROSE.

The annual west end RPZ (Runway Protection Zone) clearing project was completed on October 3, 2006.  The California Department of Forestry crews also did a great job cleaning up the airport in time for our annual Airfaire event.

Hangar inspections have been completed, and for the most part it appears that everyone (with the exception of a few) is in compliance with the Airport's and Army's guidelines.

Items noted during the inspections are as follows:
Fire extinguishers out of date or missing,
some open oil containers on the hangar floors,
lofts must have a building permit or be torn down.

As a reminder, please update your contact information and provide it to your Master Lease Holder.  Make certain that you have provided a key or combination to your Master Lease Holder; this is required in case of emergencies, like a fire or ELT issue.  Keep your aircraft airworthy during the rainy season and be prepared to remove all contents from your hangar within a 24 hour period.  Have a tow bar connected to your aircraft during this time period.

Now is your chance to get rid of those unwanted metal and wire items; a Metal & Wire Only Container… is located at the east end of the airport.  (Please ! do not throw trash in this container.)

Upcoming events:  Corona Airfaire 2006 lessons-learned meeting will be held on Saturday November 4, 2006 at 8:00 at center field deck.

Safety:  None for October
Aircraft complaints:  None this month>>>>THANKS!!!!!!!

Hazardous Materials:  As we enter the rainy season, it is very important that everyone does their part to minimize the potential for hazardous material spills and contamination.
Please dispose of all materials properly.  You can take your oil to the east end for $1.00 per gallon. Or in most cases you can take it to your nearest automotive center for disposal for free.  Please do not leave any oils or gasoline in open containers in your hangars.  If I am not available; please do not leave oil on the ground next to the oil reclamation area, at the east end of the airport. My office phone number is (951) 736-2289… call and arrange a time to drop off your oil.   By the way, this area is under constant camera surveillance and anyone who does leave hazardous materials on the ground is subjecting themselves to severe fines.  Smile you're on camera!

Insurance:  Please make sure your insurance is current and up to date and indicates The City of Corona and the Army Corps of Engineers as additionally insured.   The Master Lease Holders have been issued a copy of all non-insured aircraft and will be taking corrective action to ensure 100% compliance to this ongoing process.  If your aircraft is not operational and does not have insurance, you must submit a Declaration of Non-Operation Status form.  Please contact your Master Lease Holder or the Airport Manager for this form.

Please help me keep our Airport Safe and Neighborly!  Thanks!!!!

PILOT PROFILE

By Margaret Nunally

We are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a Man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?  Romans 8:24

Hope is the gift that Wings of Faith gives to people in foreign lands and here in the United States.  Dale Whinery, Wings of Faith founder, Chaplain (CPA member) has been a missionary for more than thirty years.  He and his volunteer staff have given up the comforts of home and family to take this precious message of the Gospel to the lost.

Dale, at the age of sixteen became interested in missions and flying.  He soloed in 1951 and has been flying since.  He brings hope, bibles, medicines, food and toys to the young and old.  The Wings of Faith support missions, and missionaries stationed in remote areas of the American Indian Reservations located in the western U.S and Mexico.  Many volunteers here at Corona Airport accompanied Dale on trips bringing joy to children who need their spirits lifted by God's Word and a simple toy.

There are 563 registered tribes located right here in our own USA. Many are hungry, overlooked and neglected.  This year a new church on the Paiute Indian Reservation located in Bishop was erected.  Another church on the Navajo Reservation is in the planning.  Fifty-five doctors, dentists, chiropractors and other volunteers were transported to Nueva Odisea. Baja Mexico using 12 planes from various mission organization including 5 workers, 3 pilots and planes from the Wings of Faith.

Dale and some of his volunteers will be flying to Israel, Egypt, Indonesia and the Philippines in 2007.  We are very proud to have Dale and some of the Wings of Faith volunteers here at Corona Airport.  Stop by the Wings of Faith office (located beside the CPA meeting room) and pick up a brochure and give Dale and his staff encouraging words as he travels bringing the Word to the lonely and lost of the world.

Hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast   Hebrew 6:19

NEWS YOU REALLY NEED

By John Elwell

If by chance you missed the airefaire, you missed a near perfect day. The crowds were somewhat light but the day was fantastic. Mike Nolan did his usual great job of announcing the event and keeping the crowd informed and interested. Thanks again Mike for a great job.

Dave had his PT 22 on display and a gentleman wandered all around the machine eyeing the glistening metal. As he visited with Dave and the others he explained that he had soloed in a PT 22 just like this one in 1943. Well nothing to do but offer the gentleman a ride, so out came the bird and a ride around the patch making an old timer very happy. That is an example of what the airefaire is really all about. Thanks Dave. (** P.S. below)

Mike Nolan did his usual great job of handling the public address system. He really does a great job of keeping the show going and keeping people interested in what is going on Thanks Mike.

Then there was Barney's birthday party. We all gathered around Barney's hanger to celebrate his 84th birthday. There was a huge crowd and a very happy Barney even though he recently had undergone surgery and was recuperating he had a great day. Thanks to all the workers for putting on this great show.

PLEASE NOTE   The Christmas season is rapidly approaching and since Margaret so appropriately Chose Dale Whinery for this months pilot profile. It is time to remind everyone that we support this mission and that during our November and our December meetings toys will be received to be distributed to the various children supported by this mission. Please bring a toy or even two to one or both of these meetings. Bring a small and lightweight toy to be shared. In addition, if you would like to be part of this very gratifying experience by  offering to make a flight or two to deliver these toys check with Nick Nicolary or Dale to offer your services. The associate editor has made three of these trips and I can assure you it was not only fun but satisfying as well.

The time will soon be here to register or renew your registration for classic and antique aircraft. If your aircraft is over 35 years old or is one of a kind and if you agree to display that aircraft at a designated public showing at least twelve times each year then you can get an exemption from the personal property tax. If you have not had this exemption you must make an initial application before February 15th, 2007 at the Riverside County Assessors office. In making that application you may have to ask several people for assistance before you get into the right section. CPA holds an open house for aircraft display the second Sunday of each month prior to our regular meeting from 1 PM until 5 PM. If you have this exemption then you will be mailed the forms in the near future. By the Riverside County Assessors office.

And a personal note. As indicated in last month's letter Lois and John Elwell are holding an open house at the Garden Grove United Methodist Church November 11th from 1PM until 5PM or until we go home to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. All our friends from CPA and other groups that we involved in are invited. We hope some of you will join us and have an opportunity to meet our children and grandchildren as well as many family members. The church is located at 12741 Main St. in downtown Garden Grove.

(**P.S. to the "1943 solo" story above...The happy fellow, James H. from Riverside, welcomes any pictures that we took of his airplane ride. Please email them to editor@coronaPilots.com and we will forward to him. James came over and spent a happy Saturday morning with the Bench-Bunch showing old picture albums. He was even a cartoonist for the albums. He tried to meet-up with Dave and Martin, but lo, maybe another Saturday. He again conveyed his thanks for the airplane ride.)
