NEXT MEETING
The next meeting will be held Sunday December 11 at 5:00 PM on the terrace at Corona Aero Partners.
Be sure to bring a toy for Wings of Faith and their Christmas program. CPA has provided support for this effort by having our members bring unwrapped toys to our fall meetings and by providing planes and pilots to deliver toys to Indian reservations and other worthy children. Toys should be brought to this meeting; if you forget they can be dropped off later. Wings of faith will be looking for volunteers to fly the gifts to the various locations. We have been big supporters of this effort in the past and we hope to do even more this year.
After our meeting we will share our food and have an evening of fellowship. Don’t forget to leave something in the drink kitty if you take liquid from the refrigerator. Don’t forget that Sunday is also the show date for our antique aircraft.
LAST MEETING
By Margaret Nunally
On November 12, 2005, the Corona Pilot Association meeting was called to order by our Vice President Shane Reichardt at 5 pm. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.
• Paul Bricker suggested that a committee meet on the direction the Airfaire of 2006 should take, the meeting to be held Saturday, November 19th at 8:30 am.
• Dale then gave an update on the Christmas collection for the Wings of Faith. They have approximately 300 toys, but need about 2,000, mostly small inexpensive toys.
• Terry Kaiser gave an update on the Scholarship and Education program that she is heading up.
• A motion was made and carried for a wireless Booster on the airport, cost not to exceed $300.00.
• Possible Chamber of Commerce membership was discussed. The CPA may sign on for $240.00.
• A $40.00 fee was approved for the registration of a website, coronapilots.org.
• A motion was carried and approved to set CPA dues for membership at $50.00 a year.
• The CPA will staff a Barnes & Noble gift wrapping booth, hopefully in the evening.
• Discussion followed on the sale of airplane postcards left over from the Airfaire.
• Nick Nicolary gave a report on the fly-in to Gillespie.
• A request was made for as many airplanes as possible for the December 10th delivery of Christmas items to Yuma, AZ.
• The care of the restroom by the fuel pumps was discussed, but a clear understanding of who is to maintain it is up for
debate.
The meeting was adjourned, followed by good food and good fellowship.
FROM THE PREZ
By Paul Bricker
We’re coming into my favorite time of the year. The Holidays are coming around, and with it we are spending more time with family and friends. The weather is cooling off, but as we are lucky enough to live in Southern California, the weather is still mild and delightful, with shirtsleeves being the norm. We can enjoy sailing on the ocean, or with a short drive, skiing in the mountains. And the flying weather is great. The heat is off, visibility is good, and usually we don’t have to deal with IFR conditions. Now I remember why the traffic and smog is worth it to live in this part of the country.
A few weeks ago Margaret Nunally, our association secretary, reached a milestone all pilots remember, when she did her first solo flight. Later that evening we cut up a shirt for her, and she and Jim hosted a Pizza party the following Sunday at the bench to celebrate with the rest of the people on the airport. Congratulation Margaret! If you didn’t have a chance before, congratulate her as you see her around the airport. (PS, she did confirm she does not fly in heels)
In a follow-up on “lessons learned” session from the Airfaire the Corona Pilots Association board decided that is more important to expand the participation at the Airfaire and toward that end will not charge admission at the Airfaire in 2006. We want to get more people from both the airport and the local community to enjoy the Airfaire, and free admission seems more appropriate. We will cut out some expenses that didn’t have much benefit this year, and will have to rely on sponsors to cover the major expenses. Several people have promoted the Flabob annual fair as the model we should follow. If you are familiar with the Flabob event, or would just like to help in 2006, please get hold of me. We are starting now to get attractions and vendors lined up to eliminate the frantic arrangements that we had to do last year.
The scholarship drive is continuing, and we have set 31 January 2006 as the cut off for applying for a scholarship this year. If you know a young person who is interested in aviation and could use a little hand in paying to get their license, get them an application. Applications can be obtained from Terri Keiser, and should soon be available on the web site. Just have them fill it out, get a few references, and turn it in to any CPA officer.
The next CPA meeting is 11 December in the normal spot at 5 pm. We think we’ll have the video connection problems fixed and Nabil Wareh will again attempt to present a slide show of his trip to China, purportedly to fix an aircraft. There is a lot more on the incredible Ha’rbin Ice Festival. He also has the video he assembled from this year’s Airfaire, and a few more examples of his sense of humor. If you have any trips or adventures you would like to share with the group, aviation related or not, just let me know and we’ll schedule you for one Sunday.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving with friends and family, and a safe and merry holiday season and New Year.
CORONA MUNICIPAL AIRPORT
By Rich Brodeur, Airport Manager
Events: I am looking for someone to help me promote the Corona Municipal Airport as a positive community service organization. One of the ways that was suggested to me was to help raise money for the Settlement House by offering rides in exchange for donations to things like the Settlement House can food drive. Another suggestion to promote the airport might be to have a monthly aircraft display on the 2nd Saturday of the month and locate this event at the front of the airport (South grass area). I would like to suggest that these suggestions be discussed at the next Corona Pilot’s Association meeting. Anyone interested in being the coordinator for either of these events, please call me or stop by my office Tuesday through Saturday.
Security: The security gate hard drive recently crashed but thanks to the assistance of a volunteer, you probably did not notice this
problem. Every card had to be re-entered manually. This process took Stephanie over 8 hours to accomplish. Thanks Stephanie!
Please report any security gate problems to me immediately at (951)736-2289 or email richard.brodeur@ci.corona.ca.us
Insurance: Please make sure your insurance is current and up to date and indicates The City of Corona and the Army Corps of Engineers as additionally insured. The Master Lease Holders have been issued a copy of all non-insured aircraft and will be taking corrective action to ensure 100% compliance to this ongoing process. If your aircraft is not operational and does not have insurance, you must submit a Declaration of Non-Operation Status form. Please contact your Master Lease Holder or the Airport Manager for this form. Uninsured aircraft will not be allowed to be stored at Corona Municipal Airport.
Mowing Contract: A new mowing contract has been approved and weather permitting, they will begin mowing around the first or second week in December.
AWSS: The Automated Weather Sensor System is scheduled to go to City Council on December 7, 2005. Installation is planned to begin around the middle of January, 2006.
RPZ: The West End Runway Protection Zone is about 75% completed and weather permitting, they will be completing this project by the middle of December.
New Business: Please join me in welcoming our newest business, Aero West Aviation. They will be located at 1973 Aviation Drive., and will be operating an aircraft rental, pilot supply shop and flight training school. Please stop by and introduce yourself to them.
Please help keep our Airport Safe and Neighborly! Thanks!!!!
CPA TREASURERS REPORT

CPA FLY-IN NOV 19th 2005
By Nick Nicolary
Wouldn't you know it - The Wxcasters "blew it" again (no pun intended). In spite of dire forecasts for high Santa Ana winds, Saturday the 19th dawned severe clear with no wind. Understandably, only two people showed up at AJO for the fly-in to Gillespie. So undaunted, we flew non stop to Flabob for breakfast!! December brings the annual Wings of Faith toy fly-in to Yuma, AZ. We hope to hold it on the Saturday December 10th. Four people have already volunteered to help: Miguel, Barney, John Elwell, and yours truly. Any others please give me a call to let me know. If the weather looks good we will load the toys on Friday December 9th, and depart early(TBD) on Saturday. You can call me at (951) 317-0725 to let me know.
PILOT PROFILE
By Margaret Nunally
Barney Starr has been a member of the Corona Pilot’s Association for many years, and has become a patriarch of the Corona Airport.
His love for aviation began as a child. Today he owns a 1943 Stearman biplane and a Cessna airplane. After World War II he earned a pilot’s license and bought his first Stearman in 1946. The lifelong bachelor found a home in Corona in the late 1980’s.
Barney loves sharing his enthusiasm for powered flight. He was thrilled as a child when he heard of Charles Lindbergh flying solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927. Barney served in the merchant marines during World War II, where he sailed the seven seas and traveled to 50 nations and every continent. In the western United States he prospected for minerals used in clay manufacturing for 35 years.

NEWS YOU REALLY NEED
By John Elwell
The end of the year is here and it is time to file your exemptions for Classical and Antique aircraft. This applies to aircraft that are 35 years old or older and the owner agrees to display the aircraft at least twelve times per year. If these conditions are met then the aircraft can be exempt from the personal property tax. This exemption MUST BE FILED with the Riverside County Assessor before February 15th, 2006. If this is your first year, come to our meeting and learn how to file this important document.
There is a great deal of conversation among our members concerning new lease agreements and addendum to lease agreements. Several important items are as a direct result of the new Flood Emergency Plan which has been developed after the January floods. As you remember, after the floods there was a very large amount of material which either floated all over the airport or drained into the Prado Basin. This caused two problems. First the Corps of Engineers was very upset because of the debris and because of the pollutants that came from the hangers when they flooded. The second problem was the heavy expense carried by the Master Lease Holders for dumpsters to haul off all of the damaged material that had been in the hangers.
In order to minimize these problems in the event of future floods it was decided to implement an emergency plan, and a major part of that program was to establish a system so that when flooding is eminent, each person would totally empty their hangers before the flood occurs. If the tenant is unwilling or unable to empty the hanger to prevent floating and destruction then the Master Lease holder can empty the hanger and charge the expense for such removal to the tenant. The measures are strong but necessary if the goal is to eliminate the problems with the Corps and reduce Master Lease Holder clean up expense for tenant caused cleanup. Let’s plan to discuss this matter at the December meeting.
Don't forget the PANCAKE BREAKFAST held the first Saturday of each month from 7 to 9 am at Bobs Café. Bob donates a portion of the proceeds to CPA. The food is great and there is one more chance for fellowship
EDITORS NOTE: Let’s not forget that there are still plenty of the Airplanes of Corona Postcards left. You get a set of 16 different postcards for only $10.00. It would be fun to go around and get each pilot to sign their aircraft’s picture. Contact Susan Brunner, get them at the Meeting, or contact any of the officers on the letterhead.
