NEXT MEETING:

The next meeting will be held October 9, 2005, and the location will be back on the Terrace of Corona Aero Partners.
The meeting will begin at the usual time (5PM). Bring a dish to share and a happy attitude as the evening promises
to be a good one. We will have our usual open house from one until five so be sure to display those classic airplanes.

AUGUST MEETING
By Margaret Nunally

The Corona Pilot’s Association meeting was called to order by or President, Paul Bricker August 14, 2005 at 5 PM. The minutes were read by Margaret Nunally and approved.

Sandi Palacios will be our new editor for the newsletter. We would like to thank John Elwell for the outstanding job he has done editing our newsletter.

Shane Reichardt gave an update on the Air Faire. We still need volunteers and golf carts. Generators are needed for the vendors working at the Air Faire. A planning meeting is scheduled for August 20th at 8 am. Nick Nicolary updated the club on our next fly-in to Camarillo, August 20th at 9:30 am.

Jim Nunally spoke on Adopt an Airport. We need volunteers to sign-up to be responsible for areas on the airport, to pickup trash and spruce up the common areas.

Yolanda Anselen showed the merchandise that is available to members, such as caps, shirts, and jackets.

A motion was made, seconded and approved by the members to refund Shane Reinhardt for the CPA website. Also classified ads will be added to the website.

Pat Brunner gave a report on their Alaska vacation.

The meeting was adjourned, and great food and fellowship followed.

FROM THE PREZ
By Paul Bricker

While the heat is still on we’re getting the end of summer, and stuff is starting to happen.

First, we’re inside 1 month until the Air Faire and it’s all coming to a head. The sponsors are set, the vendors are lined up and the attractions have been confirmed. What are left are the last minute details, of which there are plenty. There are a few day-of-the-Air Faire things we need help with. First, we still need members to fill in on some jobs during the Air Faire. These include helping Terri and her students from RCC supervise the Kids Zone or ticket sales. We also need help manning (wo-manning?) the CPA booth, helping set up tables, chairs, etc. on Saturday morning or watching after the planes on static display. Rich Brodeur is organizing a Swap Meet and he needs people to help, or you can just be available as a set of arms and legs to deal with what happens. It will be fun and you can be part of it. We also need for people who have awnings (pop-ups) and chairs that they could loan to us to contact myself or anyone associated with the Air Faire. One last item is golf carts. Rich is trying to get the loan of a few large carts to allow airport tours but it’s not a sure thing, and we could use any carts that people have available for running around.

People have asked questions over the past few months on why we have an Air Faire, what we intend to do with the money we raise, and why we are doing something or not doing something else. Let me see if I can address these issues.

First, one purpose of the CPA in the charter is…”preservation of the Corona Airport; Corona and youth orientation toward GA and all aspects of flying”…. Along that line the CPA over the years has promoted the idea of providing scholarship funds to deserving youth from the area to help introduce young people to aviation. Face it, the average age of the active pilots is going up, not down. We need new blood to keep GA viable. To do so we need a reliable source of funds lest the program becomes a one-time event. That was one of the reasons we had to raise dues and a big reason for the Air Faire. At the moment our funds are as high as they have been in a while, but there are lots of Air Faire checks to write, and we need excess beyond normal operating expenses before we can commit funding something outside the day to day expenses. The intent of these funds is to provide scholarship support to someone who would otherwise not be able to pursue flying. The exact process by which we award scholarships and the purpose that they must be used for is not finalized. If you want to be part of determining how we do this please contact our education chair, Terry Keiser.

We understand that there are many ways an Air Faire can go. Trust me, over this past 6 months I’ve learned that the options far exceed our ability to act on them, and all options are better if they are considered 6 months ago. Now is the time to start setting the direction of next year’s Air Faire. We wanted more aviation related vendors and exhibitors this year, but they have to commit 1 year in advance. Now is the time to get them signed up for next year. This is one of many examples that illustrate that the first planning meeting for next year’s Air Faire needs to be right after we take this one down. Next month I will announce when the first meeting will be. Please keep an eye open and come tell us what you would do different. If there are enough of us, and we start soon enough, the task of putting on the Air Faire will be much less onerous. We have two rules in the business I’m in: you can’t spend money you don’t have, and no matter how much or little money you have you can’t buy time. Help us take care of the money issues while we still have time.

As part of the process of promoting youth in aviation we have asked a local young man and his mother to be our guest of honor at the Air Faire. About 6 weeks ago we became aware of a 16-year-old young man, Tyler Fortney. Tyler is an honor student in Corona and spends much of his free time caring for his mother who has been relegated to a wheelchair due to arthritis. The family is living on her disability, which severely limits their funds, but they appear to be dealing with this with a smile and great attitude. It was reported that Tyler would rather fly than get a driver’s license, and Tyler and his mom will be our guests. We’ve arranged a ride in Rose, an ascent in the Hot Air balloon and an introductory flight lesson. I believe Tyler is the type of person we are looking for and one whom we can help realize their dreams. Please come out to the Air Faire and meet Tyler and his mom.

One last item: I’m running late on this column (sorry Sandy, I’ll try to improve) so I just read about a pilot who decided the weather was nice so he really didn’t need to check with Flight Service for his flight from Watsonville to San Diego. Needless to say “W” was in Ontario on Monday and this guy had the thrill of having an F-16 fire flares at him. Luckily he was able to land safely at Corona, and it did have the one positive effect of giving the Bench Bums more entertainment than usual. On the other hand it scared this poor guy and his wife out of more life than they really had to spare, and it provides another news story about a stupid little airplane wandering around and endangering the life of the President, and costing taxpayers money. Please, don’t help the opponents of GA with their arguments, no matter how poorly founded they are. Check the TFRs on every flight, even in the pattern (by the way, pattern work at Corona Monday would have gotten you the same treatment), and help prove that we can be pilots and responsible
citizens at the same time.

PILOT PROFILE
By Margaret Nunally

The Corona Pilot Association is pleased to have Dick and Ora Corcoran as members of our club. They have been on the Corona field for 30 years.

Dick and Ora first met at a family gathering. Ora was the “new” girl in town. They have been married for 54 years. During their first week of married life they bought their first plane – a 1935 Porterfield which took 3 years to build. They have owned many planes over the years, but their favorite plane is the Champ. Dick and Ora have 3 children, all of whom have taken flying lessons. Two of them have received a pilot’s license. Dick served with the Army Air Corp 8th Air Force in Europe during World War II. Dick was a crew engineer on a B24 Consolidated, and the attraction for aviation was started. A plumber by trade, Dick never had a real calling for this
type of work. Ora was a housewife, and together they raised an outstanding family.

Ask Dick about the Santa Ana Air Show where he accidentally became the opening act. Also, find out who Big John is. These questions and many more can be answered at the Bench.

NEWS YOU REALLY NEED
The Air Faire is fast approaching and several things are important and there are several things each of us can do.

First Rich is planning a swap meet for the big day. Please donate any thing you have left over to the cause. Items do not have to be aircraft related since all kinds of treasures can be sold at swap meets. If you do not want to donate the items Rich will take them on consignment and charge an appropriate commission. All proceeds will go to CPA.

Secondly please be ready to sign up for specific tasks that need to be done on October 1st. A complete list of tasks is being developed. You can serve in many different capacities on that day, and even 2 hours of your time will make a big difference. See any officer.

Don’t Forget Bob Suko is holding pancake breakfasts the first Saturday of each month at the café with some of the proceeds going to airport projects.

A WORD OF CAUTION; If you have been displaying an antique or classic airplane then listen up for there is a word of caution for you users. If your aircraft is 35 years old and if you agree to show it at least twelve times per year then you may apply for an exemption form the personal property tax. Once you have received that exemption, the County Assessor will send you two forms to fill out and return. These forms will not come at the same time.

One form is your request for your next year’s exemption. With that form you fill out the information and attach a list of the 12 places that the aircraft was displayed during the previous year. That form must be filed by February 15th in order to obtain the exemption.
The second form is an inquiry by the assessor in which they ask how much time is on the aircraft, what condition the aircraft is in, and how much you have it insured for. That form is used by the assessor to assist them in determining
the aircraft’s value.

One of our members sent in the inquiry form along with his display certificates but that was the wrong form and he received a nice tax bill. The member is trying to get a waiver based on intentions, but it is very important that you each be sure you send in the right form in February.

This bit of information will be repeated in the December issue, but take care to use the right forms.

OCTOBER HANGER INSPECTIONS
It’s time for the fall hanger inspections again. The Airport Manager, Rich Brodeur, is expecting to be accompanied by two city inspectors. Let’s all make sure our fire extinguishers are present and charged. To help with that, the people who recharge the fire extinguishers will be at the airport Friday evening and Saturday morning October 1st, the morning of the Air Faire. Also, let’s make sure the items in our hangers are aviation related items only.

October 11, 2005 -- SVS East End Hangers
October 12, 2005 -- Corona Air Ventures Hangers
October 13, 2005 -- Rosco’s West End Hangers
October 14, 2005 -- Fred Peters’ Mid Field Hangers

Airport Hangar Tenant Flood Evacuation Plan:
We will all be receiving a form to fill out for our new flood evacuation plan. Be sure to fill in yours and have it back to the Airport Manager well before the flood season starts. A lot of unnecessary damage was caused by missing contact information. Don’t let it be your own fault!
