Newsletter for January 1, 2005
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting will be held Sunday January 9th at 5:00 PM on the terrace at Corona Aero Partners. This will be the first meeting of the New Year thus a time to share the good from 2004 and the hopes for 2005.
There will be a brief business meeting followed by a safety presentation. After our meeting we will share our food and have an evening of fellowship. Don't forget to leave something in the drink kitty if you take liquid from the refrigerator.
LAST MEETING
Fred Peters discussed the new efforts for crime prevention and the Airport Watch program. The City of Corona Neighborhood watch program coordinator has been meeting with the Master Leaseholders and is developing information for our Watch program. More information will be available for future newsletters.
Margaret Nunally has been searching for a location for our Fly Into Spring Dinner Dance and Social. Margaret has agreed to chair the event if we can find a reasonable location. The Mountain View Country Club where we have been holding our annual party was severely damaged by a fire and will be closed until at least August 2005. This event has a tentative schedule for late March so mark your calendars and wait for a firm date.
Our Safety Committee will be lead by Jim Nunally and Nick Nicolary. Thanks for the service fellows.
There is a need for a special Projects coordinator. This person would help to organize small special projects that CPA could do to make the airport a more attractive place. Examples of past projects include things like improving the signage for business located on the airport. If interested contact Fred Peters or the President.
The safety meeting was led by Dave Querner and Woodrow Anselen. At a recent Wings of Faith flight consisting of four airplanes provided some real events for demonstrating mistakes that are easy to make and which we should all be aware of and should avoid under all circumstances. One of the planes ended up on top of the overcast and decided to make a descent through the clouds to arrive at Corona.. That pilot frightened himself and his passenger. That same pilot showed courage by letting his experience to be shared in the interest of aviation safety, and an interesting discussion followed.
FROM THE PREZ

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and that you have survived adding too many pounds to your frames! We can always start a runway walking club if need be! Thanks to all who helped with the gift wrapping of books at Barnes & Noble this year! As of this writing, we have made $68 and still have the biggest day to look forward to -- December 24! Hopefully the group wrapping tomorrow will break the bank and make lots of money for the CPA. We wrapped from 9-12 noon four days, and have discussed whether wrapping after 5 p.m. next year will net more money.
The next safety meeting will be presented by David Querner and will cover pilot operations at towered airports, airport signs, markings and procedures. Be sure to mark your calendar!
As many of you already know, the aircraft that crashed off the end of the runway on Thanksgiving Day did not have insurance. Be sure that if your aircraft can move under its own power, that it has current insurance. Another aircraft without insurance crashed into a hangar on the west end causing extensive damage to both the electrical panel, the hangar and his own aircraft. The master leaseholders (MLH) have leases with the City which require all aircraft that move under their own power to carry insurance. Without this insurance, the master leaseholders can lose their lease with the City. The option for the MLH is to evict you from the airport, which is not a pretty option. Stay on top of your privilege to stay on the field at Corona --- keep your insurance current and have copies of your coverage sent to the City of Corona, the Army Corp of Engineers and your Master Lease Holder!
All classic aircraft property tax exempt claim forms must be completed and returned to the assessors office by February 15. Don't lose this valuable exemption!
See you at the next meeting!

Recent events: The California Department of Forestry crews have completed the RPZ clearing at the west end of the airport. Public works crews began installing the rip/rap and construction of a ditch to divert water away from the hangars, however, they had to halt their work. Trucks and vehicles were sinking into the mud. They will be returning when this area dries out enough to support their vehicles. Additionally, CDF crews are clearing out the southwest water runoff area. Two 60 foot emergency evacuation areas have been cleared for aircraft at the east end of the airport. During the clearing process, the CDF crews have found car batteries, telephone poles, a barrel filled with cement, and lots of trash and beer bottles. They have really done a great job!
Security: First Incident, report of fuel stolen from an aircraft and the Second Incident reported by the aircraft owner of a 1978 Sundowner N5161M stated that someone stole his artificial horizon. According to the Owner the item stolen was replaced with another inoperative unit, which he did not discover until 12/11/04. He had not flown this aircraft since Thanksgiving Day 11/25/04.
Insurance: Please make sure your insurance is current and up to date and indicates the City of Corona and the Army Corps of Engineers as "Additionally Insured". The Master Lease Holders have been issued a list of all non-insured aircraft and will be taking corrective action to ensure 100% compliance to this ongoing process. If your aircraft is not operational and does not have insurance, you must submit a Declaration of Non-Operation Status form. Please contact your Master Lease Holder or the Airport Manager for this form.
Incidents: A Twin-Engine Cessna 411 aircraft crashed shortly after take-off on Thanksgiving Day 11/25/04. Two souls perished in this accident. To make matters worse, the aircraft was not insured.
Someone broke another runway light. This is the second month in a row. If you hit a light, please report it to me. For your information, each runway/taxiway light assembly cost almost $400.00, not counting labor.
Complaints: December 15, 2004, the Assistant Principal from Prado View Elementary School called to say that an airplane was so low that they could see the pilot. Unfortunately, they did not look at the aircraft number. December 18, 2004, Lady stated that an aircraft was flying very low altitude over her home near Green River Road.
Please help me keep our Airport Safe! Thanks!!!!....
If you have any questions or suggestions---please stop by the office, call me, or email...

PILOT PROFILE
By Susan Bruner
George Bougeokles is this month's nominee! He and his wife, Irma, have been on the field for ten years. He came to us after he was laid off from Continental Airlines, where he was based at LAX. He worked in aircraft appearance where he painted, then worked his way up into management -- supervisor, then assistant manager. Nowadays, he works with the painters, the vendors, and follows Irma's direction (as all good husbands do)! By George Painting has just recently taken over the center paint booth at the Corona airport (previously held by Ed McKay and then Bill Silze as Bill's Paint Booth, for those of you looking for him!). George has remodeled the facility with new compressors, and water dryers and is doing great! For all the Corona Pilots' Association members there is a $500 discount for a complete strip and paint! Be sure to mention you are a member when getting an estimate. George and Irma just love the airport and hope to do business here for many, many years.
George and Irma have three sons, but none are interested in aviation at this time. George recently sold his 150, which was his second aircraft after he had a 172, which he fixed up and sold. He flies with pilots, but does not have his license yet. Once he gets time away from the business, he will work on getting his license. There must be a good instructor on the field willing to teach him, no?
NEWS YOU REALLY NEED
Jeremy Nolan soloed on his sixteenth birthday while proud family looked on. Now it looks like Jeremy can say like father like son. Congratulations Jeremy.
If your aircraft is 35 years old or older and if you show the aircraft publicly twelve (12) times each year then you may be exempt from the personal property tax on the plane. You have to file for the exemption each year before February 15th at your County Assessors office. The CPA sponsors twelve open house Sundays each year.
If you have received the exemption form for 2005 you must fill out the form and list where you displayed the aircraft during 2004. Then you need to attach the certificates signed by the event coordinator for each event where you displayed during the year. Save the blank form you received to present during 2005. If you have questions call the editor, he will be at the January meeting and will be available to review your forms prior to submittal.
A special thanks to those who volunteered to gift wrap at Borders book store as a fund raiser for CPA. Borders allows groups to gift wrap with the proceed going 100% to the organization. The CPA volunteers worked mostly mornings and we made $117. Not only did we make a little money but we experienced a fellowship and got to know each other better. In looking back we found that we would be busier if we worked some evening shifts. This is something to think about for next year.
CPA Fly-INS
By Nick Nicolary
The fly-in for the month of December became the CPA Christmas present for many underprivileged children in southwest Arizona and several northern Mexican communities. The generosity of the CPA members translated into enough collected toys and clothes to fill a total of six airplanes split into two flights, to Yuma AZ for Dale Winery's Wings of Faith Charities.
On December 4, members Yolanda & Woody Anselen, Miguel Yero, John Elwell, and yours truly departed Corona for Yuma. Upon our arrival the gifts were delivered to four missionaries' to be distributed among those needy communities. We all went to lunch (which was shortened by a weather forecast indicating deteriorating conditions at AJO). Those who attended the last CPA meeting were privy to an "I learned about flying from that" safety session concerning the return flight.
Barney's Cessna 175 had starter problems and could not make the first flight, so on December 20, We tried once again, but alas this time the engine also failed to start. Undaunted yours truly was "sent on ahead" while Barney and Roger loaded toys and clothes into a van and headed for Riverside to hop into Rogers 310 for the trip! They landed 5 minutes after a certain (relatively slow) Cherokee 140, and two more loads of toys and clothes made it in time for Christmas!
January 15th is 2005's first fly-in, and it's a non-stopper all the way to El Monte! Departure time is 10:00AM and we will dine at Mallards Sky Dive Restaurant, see you there!
