Newsletter for December 1, 2004
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting will be held Sunday December 12th at 5:00 PM on the terrace at Corona Aero Partners. Be sure to bring a toy for Wings of Faith and their Christmas program. CPA has provided support for this effort by having our members bring unwrapped toys to our fall meetings and by providing planes and pilots to deliver toys to Indian reservations and other worthy children. Toys should be brought to this meeting, if you forget they can be dropped off later.
Wings of faith will be looking for volunteers to fly the gifts to the various locations. We have been big supporters of this effort in the past and we hope to do even more this year.
On December 17, 20, 21, and 24th, from 9 a.m. until noon, members of the Corona Pilots Association are to be present at the Barnes & Noble off Cajalco in Corona, arriving 15 minutes early, to set up to do gift wrapping in their store. This can be a fundraiser for next years AirFaire, so please call Susan at 735-6057 to volunteer at any of the above times. If you need a CPA shirt, contact Yolanda at 279-6520. You can also sign up at our regular meeting.
After our meeting we will share our food and have an evening of fellowship. Don't forget to leave something in the drink kitty if you take liquid from the refrigerator.
LAST MEETING
Over forty members were present for the last meeting. The food was excellent and plentiful and fellowship was everywhere. The Terrace continues to be a superb vantage point to see what is going on at the airport.
Woody and the safety crew did another fine job of demonstrating the importance of cockpit communication and to always exercise discipline for a safe flight. Excellent examples of "Get home itis" and "I think we can make it" were presented in video format. Whether we are flying heavy Iron or a Cub, we should always think about what we are doing and we should approach every flight professionally.
The possibility of establishing a swap meet along with the Open House was discussed. This concept could be a lot of fun and could well generate some income for airport support. This item will continue to be discussed in the future.
Dale Winery, of Wings of Faith mission, was present to talk about how that organization flies toys and clothing to various Indian Reservations and some to Mexico. He expressed his gratitude to CPA for the solid support that we have given to that organization and for the help we have promised this year.
The results of the last round of hanger inspections were presented. Overall the majority of the hanger tenants has done a good job of keeping up their hangers and are in compliance with City and Federal regulations.
There was a major discussion about the possibility of flooding on the airport. Recent heavy rains created flooding in some hangers as a result of heavy runoff and the drainage area becoming clogged. Rich Broduer explained that he was getting most of the problem areas opened up so water could leave the airport more freely.
The second concern was from water backing up behind Prado Dam. The dam is being raised but Corps of Engineers have stated that even though the capacity of Prado Basin is going to be more, they have also greatly improved the ability to release and control water during flooding. If water does back up from Prado there is normally plenty of time to warn users of rising water so planes can be moved to higher ground. The last time the airport experienced major flooding from the basin was in 1983 and the Corps has made a number of improvements since that time. At any rate, users are cautioned to always be sure their landlord has a hanger key and an up to date phone number for you.
FROM THE PREZ
By Shawnie Querner
Another great round of applause for Woodrow Anselen in presenting his safety seminar! Remember, he tells us, FLY THE PLANE!! Those words are only too true. Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, Thanksgiving Day, we had a plane based at our airport take off and crash into the trees off the end of the runway. Preliminary information is that one or both engines were smoking on takeoff. Both on board were killed. Safety is a vital part of every flight and the presentations provided by the CPA members will help all of us stay safe. David Querner is presenting the safety seminar in December, which will include runway markings, among other items. Be sure to come and join us for the fantastic information you will receive, as well as share food and conversation with other members!
Those of you who are interested in wrapping books at Barnes and Noble during the month of December, we need to hear from you! We need folks on December 20 and 21 from 9 a.m. until noon. Remember, 100% OF THE DONATIONS RECEIVED GO TO CPA!!! These funds help us with the airfair each year and we would like to get a scholarship fund going to help a young prospective pilot fulfill his dream of earning his ticket. Soooo, please call Susan Brunner at 951-735-6057 to fill a slot. We will be having lunch afterward, so it is a good chance for us to have some fun both during and after the gift wrapping session.
MERCHANDISE CORNER
CPA has a variety of Merchandise on hand and others that can be ordered. Items such as caps, shirts, and jackets for info contact Yolanda Anselen at (951)279-6520
SWAP CORNER
This is a new feature for our members. If you have an item to sell or to swap or if you are in need of an item you think another member might be willing to part with, notify the editor and we will include it in the newsletter.

Recent events:
The California Department of Forestry crews have completed the RPZ clearing at the west end of the airport. Public works crews began installing the rip/rap and construction of a ditch to divert water away from the hangars, however, they had to halt their work. Trucks and vehicles were sinking into the mud. They will be returning when this area dries out enough to support their vehicles. Additionally, CDF crews are clearing out the southwest water runoff area. Two 60 foot emergency evacuation areas have been cleared for aircraft at the east end of the airport. During the clearing process, the CDF crews have found car batteries, telephone poles, a barrel filled with cement, and lots of trash and beer bottles. The CDF crews will be returning the week of 11/29/04 to complete this work. They have really done a great job!
Security: None reported
Insurance: Please make sure your insurance is current and up to date and indicates The City of Corona and the Army Corps of Engineers as "additionally insured".
Incidents: Aircraft ran into a hangar, causing substantial damage to the aircraft and the building. Fortunately no one was injured. This incident occurred while the pilot was attempting to prop start his aircraft. Aircraft was not occupied at the time and it was not tied down. The aircraft traveled about 30 feet straight for the hangar. To make matters worst, the aircraft was not insured. Please keep your insurance current and on file with your Master Lease Holder and the Airport Manager.
Someone broke a runway light, pieces was shattered all over the runway (25). If you hit a light, please report it to me. If you see anyone break a light, please report it to me. If you break a light and don't want to tell me then at least clean up the broken glass to prevent a more serious accident or injury to a fellow pilot. For your information, each runway/taxiway light assembly cost almost $400.00, not counting labor.
Please help me keep our Airport Safe! Thanks!!!!....
If you have any questions or suggestions---please stop by the office, call me, or email...

PILOT PROFILE
By Susan Bruner
This month I talked to John Pappas, who I affectionately call "Rose's Dad." John has owned Rose since 1997 and has been making dreams of flying in a DC-3 come true for many pilots and passengers alike. You can get rated in the DC-3 by contacting John at 949-472-9612. His wife Betty will gladly assist you in scheduling time with John in Rose.
I have to say that each time I see Rose fly, I stop where I am just to watch her soar overhead. Soaring may sound like a stretch, but I find that seeing the behemoth seemingly drift afloat in the air is nearly magical. The size of her, especially as many of you have seen in comparison to other aircraft on the field, makes you shiver with awe that she can get off the runway as effortlessly as she does and then climb gracefully into the sky, is just something you don't ever tire from seeing. Many a day I have been on the Terrace and watched her take off or land, and invariably someone is there on the deck taking pictures, totally amazed that she actually lands on our field. All of you have the opportunity to fly in her by scheduling time with John or Betty. The rates are very affordable and perhaps if there is enough interest by the members, we can get an entire plane load to go out for a twilight flight. Don't let the rationale of "I'll do it someday" keep you from calling, just go for it!
NEWS YOU REALLY NEED
This is the last newsletter this year, so on behalf of all the officers and volunteers of the Corona Pilot's Association we wish you all -VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR-. May your 2005 be even a better year than 2004. We also wish to thank all those who have been active and have done so much to make this the organization it is today.
Have you considered receiving your newsletter by e-mail? E-mail is fast and is a slightly different version. By using the web site we have more flexibility to use color and to use more pictures and the e-mail saves the CPA about 70 cents for each newsletter. We presently have 45 members receiving the newsletter by e-mail and you can join them by sending an e-mail to the editor LJEJWE@dslextreme.com <mailto:LJEJWE@dslextreme.com> and simply say you would like to receive your letter by e-mail, or you can phone him at the number in the header.
Are your County Assessor forms up to date for the year 2004? The December meeting will be the last open house for the year. If you have signed the registration book but have not had your Assessors form completed , the event coordinator will be at the meeting to bring forms up to date.
If your aircraft is 35 years old or older and if you show the aircraft publicly twelve (12) times each year then you may be exempt from the personal property tax on the plane. You have to file for the exemption each year before February 15th at your County Assessors office. The CPA sponsors twelve open house Sundays each year.
Saturday November 27th in the early morning Six CPA members were poised to travel and our planes were loaded with toys. Our destination was Yuma Arizona. We were in great spirits but the weather man let us down. The mission for Wings of faith was re-scheduled and we enjoyed a morning of fellowship hanging around the bench and telling stories.
CPA Fly-INS
By Nick Nicolary
Well, once again it looked as if Mother Nature was going to "rain" on the CPA parade as Saturday morning November 18th dawned overcast and appeared to be threatening rain. However a CP (Corona Pilot) Airborne Observation revealed that the overcast was high and good ole Coyote Canyon was clear enough to "shoot-on-through", and just maybe one would get his plane washed on the way over! Nine airplanes (count em folks nine!) and 11 hardy CPA'ers headed southeast to the thriving metropolis of Borrego Springs! The closer everyone got, the better the weather became, by the time all had landed it was sunny and 78 degrees!! Our happy "gaggle" made their way to the Crosswinds Airport Cafe. Although only one waitress was available for what turned out to be two large groups of hungry pilots, she overcame the time deficit with her winning personality and willingness to "put up" with our eclectic needs! It was a definite case of good food (lunch), better company and an unexpectedly pleasant flying day.
Hope to see you all on the December 11 trip to Santa Ynez!
Best; Nick
You can sign up at the C.A.V. fueling station or by calling Nick. If you don’t have access to a plane, call Nick and see if there are any empty seats. For any other information call Nick at (951) 317-0725

(Here's one for Nick....)
While working is Stuttgart, Germany, in 1979 I had the opportunity to ride in and talk to the crew of the Goodyear Blimp N2A. They related the following story:
On trips from Spain where they were based they often crossed through Paris air space. Occassionally they would be asked to hold over certain points such as VORs, etc. They would then locate that point, stear the blimp directly over it, turn into the wind and cancel its speed with their engine thrust. Then they would call Paris ATC and say that they were holding over said point and wait. After a long pause the puzzled voice of the controller would ask, "Uhhh...N2A what type of aircraft are you?"
