NEXT MEETING
The next meeting will be held Sunday October 10th at 5:00 PM on the terrace at Corona Aero Partners. Don’t forget Sunday afternoon is our open house from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, so display those vintage airplanes. John Elwell will be on the airport so sign in at his hanger or at the central fueling station. After all this activity, we will share an evening of fine food and aviation fellowship. Be sure to bring a dish to share and a fun attitude.
LAST MEETING
The September meeting was blessed with spectacular weather. The terrace continues to be an outstanding venue for our meetings. Much of the business meeting was devoted to final preparations for the Airfaire. Volunteers were signed up for a number of tasks that will need to be performed on October 2nd. CPA is also blessed with a new TV for our programs. This acquisition was led by Pat Brunner who made the purchase and handled the delivery. Fred Peters donated a DVD player and we can now make easy presentations at our meetings. Thanks to those who helped.
Woody Anselen put that new TV to good use with two very interesting videos which were recreations of accidents using the actual cockpit recorders form the airplanes involved. Both were of extremely difficult situations. One showed what happens when the crew panics and does not communicate well the other demonstrated the importance of crew coordination and to remember to always FLY THE AIRPLANE. The first video was of a 757 in South America when the maintenance crew left the static ports covered. The crew departed night IMC and found themselves in a difficult situation. They were very uncoordinated and lost the airplane. This might have been survivable if they had remained calm, coordinated their efforts and placed a priority on flying the airplane. The second video was Captain Al Haines and the DC10 that nearly made it to Sioux City Iowa with no controls, a well coordinated effort.
We had several new members present. Jason and Judy Thomas were among the newcomers, they own a Cessna 120. Judy is the pilot and Jason is learning. David Thompson, another new member, is the proud owner of a Cessna 150. Shane and Sherri Reichart, who live in Corona and have a 172 and are looking forward to becoming active members. Richard and Marie Reichardt are also new members, they do not have an airplane but they have a strong interest in aviation.
FROM THE PREZ
By Shawnie Querner The AirFaire is almost upon us and we (meaning all of you) need to be calling Susan Brunner to volunteer for spots with which we need help. We are in need of folks to do the Airport Tours on the 6-seat golf carts; we need people to help man the CPA booth and the swap meet; we need folks to work the gate (2 hour increments for all the above spots); and we need help in set up and take down of tables and chairs. Further, those of you who offered the use of your tables and chairs, please get them to Irma BEFORE September 30, as we need to get a good count of what we have. We still need door prizes of toys for the kids and some items for adults (perhaps gift certificates to local restaurants or to Bob’s Chili & Chow Hall.) You can contact establishments and ask for donations to the AirFaire, where their business name will be announced when the door prize is given out. We still need some donated flights (last year we had 17, this year we only have 6 so far – we would like 12 total).
All in all it is looking like we will have a great turnout. We have over 30 vendor spots, food, a rock wall and jump house for the kids, and lots of aircraft on display. Skydivers and remote controlled aircraft and helicopters are also scheduled. Remember folks, this is OUR AirFaire, so everyone’s participation helps make it the best it can be. Each year has gotten progressively better, and we should all be proud of the work we have accomplished. Call Susan at (951) 735-6057 to volunteer your time. Take Irma at By George Aircraft Painting your tables and chairs before September 30 (write your name on the bottom of everything if you expect to get it back). Any gift certificates or donated items for the door prizes can be given to Rich Brodeur or Sue Langham. Thanks for your help in making this a success!
Aircraft Spruce will be having their big sale that day as well, so be sure to visit them if you have some time. They will be doing runs throughout the day to their site so start working on your “wish list!”. Zap Printing is generously donating informational placards for your prop for those who will have their airplane on display. If you are opening your hangar doors to show your airplane, be sure to pick a placard up at the CPA booth. If you are showing your airplane for classic aircraft exemption you can get signed off at the CPA booth by John Elwell, Shawnie Querner or Yolanda Anselen. A great big Thank You to Fred Peters for all he has done to make this AirFaire successful. Another thank you to Terri Keiser and Riverside Community College for their efforts in getting our tickets, posters and flyers designed and printed. Great job!
The next safety meeting is being presented by Chris Okwudibonye on runway incursions. This ought to be a real eye opener so be sure to come!

AIRPORT MANAGER
Recent events: The Corona 2004 Airfaire is fast approaching. This year we are dedicating the Airfaire in memory to David Kula, the past President of the Corona Pilot’s Association. There will be many activities, vendors and antique aircraft on display. Also featured this year will be a Swap Meet.

If your item is sold, 90% of the amount listed on the item will be returned to you and the remainder goes to the Corona Airfaire. Here is your opportunity to clean out your hangar, garage and closets. The items do not have to be aircraft related. Please drop off all items by 2pm on Thursday September 30, 2004 at the Airport Manager’s office. Look forward to seeing all of you on Saturday October 2, 2004.

PILOT PROFILE
Gale Grant is this month’s recipient of the Profile. He began flying in 1946 in Luscombes and purchased his first plane, a Luscombe, in 1949. He has owned four planes and had a Cherokee 160 for 23+ years. Before he realized it was silly to jump out of a plane (though not a perfectly good one), he was into parachuting. Back then there was no skydiving as they did not know how to control the chute. He got his commercial rating in April 1951 but never really enjoyed flying folks around, so went back to just enjoying himself. He has over 5000 hours in his log book. He has also flown Staggerwing Beechcraft, Stearman and Wacos, and lots of other normal type of aircraft. He taught his beautiful wife, Doris, and his son, Jeff, to fly. Doris flies well from the right seat, but not the left – in a pinch it will do! He has been everywhere he wants to go so now he spends his time flying to lunch. Any takers?
NEWS YOU REALLY NEED
Don’t Forget the AIRFAIRE October 2nd , the time is now growing short. Remember the Airfaire is now totally sponsored by the CPA and other interested groups but it is our show. Let’s make it a good one.
Several years ago the City of Corona abolished the Airport Advisory Commission, which left a void for communication between the users of the airport and the City. In an effort to provide some communication with users, Bill Cobb originated monthly meetings with all of the Master Lease Holders on the field. The Corona Pilots Association has been in constant attendance at these meeting as the only real representation of the users of the airport. Someone will continue to be at these meetings and will do our best to represent the Pilots and aircraft owners. Members who have concerns should bring those matters up at our regular meetings or contact any of the officers, or go directly to the Airport Manager.
In an effort to further improve the communications, the new Manager has agreed to hold at least one evening meeting to allow any users to address concerns with the airport operation. It will occur sometime after the first of the New Year when his work load returns to normal.
Have you noticed Sue Langham is making use of her exercise time to walk the runway and look for tidbits like excess screws. Now Gale has some help. They both find a lot of junk.
Les Vanmeter is getting better, had surgery on his his leg and foot, and is now recuperating. His cell phone number is posted on the bulletin board, and he would like to hear from his friends.
The Airport Manager will be conducting the annual hanger inspections beginning the week of October 9th.It is important to remember that both the City and the Corps of Engineers that only aviation related items may be stored in the hangers. A current Fire extinguisher is required as well as all items in jugs and jars must be labeled. Clean up your hanger and be ready.
-->> Corona Air Ventures has arranged for a fire extinguisher service company to be at their facility on Oct 2nd. You can leave your extinguisher with Patrick, but you must prepay in order to have it serviced. That is the day of the Airfaire, so be sure to leave it early along with your payment. Be sure to check out the aviation library located in the meeting room at the terrace. We have a number of new books on display. The Corona Fire Department is sponsoring an emergency support program some time in September and is encouraging CPA to participate. CPA Fly-INS
By Nick Nicolary
Saturday the 20th dawned, and of course mother nature threw in the typical Corona overcast which dampened the spirits of those who were looking forward to the trip to Lancaster. Susan and Pat Brunner decided to try to skirt the overcast and took off headed westbound. Well, low and behold, a mere three miles west the skies cleared and so they pointed up to the northwest and headed for, wait a minute, there must have been the overpowering smell of barbeque in the air as there was a slight deviation to the north and they ended up at Agua Dulce! According to Susan, the winds were moderate, the food was great, and She and Pat had a good time and highly recommend that we put Agua Dulce on the CPA fly-in list. Consider that done for next season!!
Remember that the next fly-in is to Santa Paula (SZP) on Saturday October 16th, hopefully we will see you then Launch time will be between 9 and 10 AM. Listed below are scheduled Fly Ins for the rest of the year.
Oct. 16-Santa Paula
Nov. 13-Borrego Springs
Dec. 11-Santa Inez
You can sign up at the Corona Airventure fueling station or by calling Nick. If you don’t have access to a plane, call Nick and see if there are any empty seats. For any other information call Nick at (909) 317-0725
