NEXT MEETING
The next meeting will be held Sunday September 12th at 5:00 PM on the terrace at Corona Aero Partners. This will be the last meeting before our big Airfaire and we will be taking names and hours of volunteers for the ticket booth and other areas throughout the Airfaire, so be prepared to sign up for something. The planning is going well and the next planning meeting will be at 4:00 PM before our regular meeting. Don’t forget Sunday afternoon is our open house from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, so display those vintage airplanes. John Elwell will be back so sign in at his hanger or at the central fueling station. After all this activity, we will share an evening of fine food and aviation fellowship. Be sure to bring a dish to share and a fun attitude.
LAST MEETING
The August meeting was well attended and the evening was pleasant, The Veranda at the meeting place is a very attractive and pleasant place for aviation enthusiasts to watch the runway and to share flying stories. Cris Okwudibonye and David Querner led the Safety meeting with a discussion about the importance of proper preflight and the use of airspace. This discussion included the Presidential TFR’s and that the Mini Routes over LA have been restored, these can be found on the Los Angeles terminal charts. A question and answer session followed which gave everyone a chance to get important questions answered. Rich Broduer was present and discussed several issues. Someone dumped oil on the airport, strangely the dump occurred near the oil barrel for legitimate dumping. He stressed the serious problems this can cause for the airport under the Storm Water Program. Pat Brunner reported that he is still working on a donated TV, let’s see if he is successful.
FROM THE PREZ
By Shawnie Querner
We are rapidly closing in on the AirFaire and will be contacting more of you to volunteer for services on October 2. We are in need of donated flights for the raffle, which was a big hit last year. If you are interested in donating a flight, contact Susan Brunner at 735-6057 and leave a message.
Our condolences to Don Sprankle on the passing of his wife Peggy. Don, you know we are all here for you if you need anything.
This month’s safety meeting will be presented by Woodrow Anselen. Ought to be a good turn out for this one!
Lastly I would like to thank Denny Drop and Pat Brunner for taking charge of the clean up after the meetings. Seems like with everyone pitching in a little bit here and there (taking the trash to the dumpsters, moving the chairs back to the second office, doing dishes, etc.), the work gets done faster without strain to one person. It also shows great appreciation to Fred Peters to leave the office as we found it. Thanks everybody!
MERCHANDISE CORNER
CPA has a variety of Merchandise on hand and others that can be ordered. Items such as caps, shirts, and jackets. Some of these items might be available at our monthly meeting. Please see an officer for more information. ---- We are also in need of a person willing to coordinate this activity. Please contact one of the officers
SWAP CORNER
This is a new feature for our members. If you have an item to sell or to swap or if you are in need of an item you think another member might be willing to part with, notify the editor and we will include it in the newsletter. ---- There are member airplanes for sale...Bob Heer's Cessna 172, and Sol Olynger's Cessna 180. Check on the bulletin board in the Corona Airventure's Pilot Lounge

PILOT PROFILE
This month I wanted to talk about our former airport manager, Bill Cobb. We had the opportunity to visit with him in August at his new digs on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He purchased the property in the late 70’s and built a cottage there a few years later.
Pat and I arrived there a few weeks after Hurricane Alexis roared through. With winds near 100 mph, they got quite a bit of water around the window sills and plenty of water under the cottage (it is on stilts, as are most homes in the area). Unfortunately, it also got water in his new car, which the insurance company told him they would total. Looks good as ever, but apparently salt water and engines do not mix. By comparison, Hurricane Charley didn’t even give them a drop of water.
Bill and Vicki are looking great (Bill finished his last radiation treatment while we were there so we got to celebrate with him, and Vicki had her gallbladder removed here in California only a week before driving cross-country)! They are acclimating to the area well, as they had grown up not far from there.
The accent Bill carried around the airport with him is more pronounced when in the company of the other locals. They were the most gracious of hosts and taught Pat how to Surf-Fish! For those who don’t know what that is (we didn’t either), you back your truck up to the surf and throw your line out! A portable grill next to us and we were set! Unfortunately, no fish were caught, but the hot dogs were good! (See the pictures below....)
NEWS YOU REALLY NEED
Dick Corcoran is doing better. A package of Trade-a-Planes, Pacific Flyers and a couple of magazines were Fed-X'd to him, and he really appreciated them. If you have any reading to provide, please send. If you want to keep up on the Corcorans' progress, please see Meta at the Restaurant, or Roger at SVS Hangars.
Sue Langham is recovering from bypass surgery and is doing well and back at the airport. Last week, she was walking the runway with Rich Brodeur. Rumors anyone? We are all happy to see her back on her feet, looking better than ever.
Don’t Forget the AIRFAIRE October 2. The Planning is underway and the time is now growing short. Much help will be needed for three days to get the show set up and to make it all happen on the 2nd so be ready to help.
Be sure to check out the aviation library located in the meeting room at the terrace. We have a number of new books on display. Pat Keating, one of our members, recently moved to Colorado and has donated these new books for our enjoyment. This was no ordinary contribution. Pat went the extra mile to see that we had them. He made several phone calls to this editor while he was in Colorado and finally flew them from Centennial Airport in Denver to Meadow Lake airport outside Colorado Springs where I picked them up. Thanks Pat for the books and your extra effort to see that we had them.
The Corona Fire Department is sponsoring an emergency support program some time in September and is encouraging CPA to participate. Find out more at www.discovercorona.com <http://www.discovercorona.com>
Don’t Forget the AIRFAIRE October 2nd. The Planning is underway and the time is now growing short. Much help will be needed for three days to get the show set up and to make it all happen on the 2nd, so be ready to help. We are also in need of door prizes to be given away. And call Susan if you want to donate a Plane ride. We would also like to have some toys donated to give away to young people as door prizes. Dig deep and see what you can do.... Remember the Airfaire is now totally sponsored by the CPA and other interested groups. It is our show and let’s make it a good one. We need HELP-HELP-HELP.
Over forty members are currently receiving their newsletter via E-mail which they can access through a web site created and paid for by Sol Olynger. To those members who have praised and enjoyed the recent on-line newsletters, the improvements are in no small part attributable to Sol and his efforts. HOWEVER, we need someone willing to take over the management of the web site. Sol will set it up make the transfers and help the new person get started. If any one is willing to assume this responsibility, please come forward before the web site gets too big to transfer.
As noted by the Airport Manager, he will be conducting the annual hanger inspections beginning the week of October 9th. It is important to remember that both the City and the Corps of Engineers that only aviation related items may be stored in the hangers. A current Fire extinguisher is required as well as all items in jugs and jars must be labeled. Clean up your hanger and be ready. Several Master Lease Holders will sponsor a day for fire extinguisher recharge sometime in September, so watch for those days. We may be able to announce dates at our CPA meeting.
CPA Fly-INS By Nick Nicolary Saturday August 14th, dawned Sunny, Clear, and good ole California Hazy, but true to our calling, undaunted by those puffy little buildups hanging on the mountain tops, and sure in the knowledge we were NOT going to Santa Monica, the small group of four (count em folks, four) CPA aircraft launched into the mid morning sky, well actually sort of staggered, as it was also California warm!! Where were we headed, you ask, well French Valley, of course! Even in the Cherokee Elsinore finally slid by, and low and behold French Valley showed up just where the GPS said it should (modern miracles never cease)! The resturant was not crowded and our group of eight enjoyed a leisurely couple of hours of "conversation" intermixed with our "brunching". The food was good, the service was "French Valley" typical, and on the return trip we noticed that those puffy little buildups were now getting to be ugly, tall, Cumulo-get-homeis clouds! Hey, they of course stayed over the mountains, after all it was a CPA fly-in! (See the pictures below....)
Remember, Saturday September 18th's fly-in is to Lancasters Fox Field (WJF).
Listed below are scheduled Fly Ins for the rest of the year.
Sept. 18-FoxField
Oct. 16-Santa Paula
Nov. 13-Borrego Springs
Dec. 11-Santa Inez
You can sign up at the Corona Airventure fueling station or by calling Nick. If you don’t have access to a plane, call Nick and see if there are any empty seats. For any other information call Nick at (909) 317-0725
MY TWO CENTS Quoted from Gale G. Yes, I landed my BT13 at Meadowlark. Lotsa times. I know a guy who landed a 485 Staggerwing Beach there. I guess we were too young to know it was a short runway. Sorta makes you wonder when you see a c-150 gliding past the pumps at Corona.
New invention--BOOKS -not OnLine- !! !! Fred Peters is building a Library of aviation books at the Pilot’s lounge where our meetings are held. CPA Members can check out books for reading. Contact Sue Langham or Susan Bruner

(Why do my ears ring 'Win one for the Gipper' on this one...)
A long time ago, bopping along in my 180 Arrow at 10,000 feet, IFR in VFR conditions, from Boston to Kalamazoo. It had taken me 20 minutes to get that high -- 10 of that for the last 2,000 feet. Then, Cleveland Center asked me to climb to 11,000 feet for traffic...
Me:...........You mean it?
ARTCC:...........Sure do.
Me:...........Do I hafta?
ARTCC:...........Yep. Me:...........Okay ... but it's gonna take me ten minutes or better.
ARTCC:...........Okay, then if I ask you to descend to 9,000 for ten minutes, how long will it take you to get back to 10? Me:...........'Oh, 'bout the same..1MV....'
ARTCC:...........Okay, I guess I'll have to go to plan B.... 1MV, maintain one-zero thousand. United 123, turn right 20-degrees for traffic; American 456, maintain niner thousand for opposite direction traffic, 12 o'clock 10 miles at 10 thou; Trans World 789, cancel direct, turn right 250-degrees, and stop the descent at 0ne-two thousand ...
