NEXT MEETING
The next meeting will be held Sunday, August 8, at 5:00 PM on the terrace at Corona Aero Partners. The weatherman has promised we will have summer weather for this event so a summer evening on the terrace, aviation conversation and good food is a very promising event that you will not want to miss. The editor issues a monthly reminder that this is also our show date for vintage aircraft. the sign-in book is in the care of Charlie Ammar for the month of August and he will also sign attendance certificates. If you can find him he will sign them for you.
LAST MEETING
Our July meeting resembled a summer Congressional session. Most of the leadership was away on summer jaunts. Susan Brunner did an excellent job of guiding the group through the business meeting and Cris Okwudibonye provided an interesting review of airspace requirements. This program was also valuable for our spouses in that they can also help us to keep in the airspace where we belong. Thanks spouses for being interested. CPA is in need of a television for meeting programs. Pat Brunner reported that he has contacts who might donate a machine to the organization. More next meeting. A decision was made to sell toy airplanes at the upcoming Airfair as a fund raiser. A presentation was given concerning the City of Corona’s neighborhood Watch program and the possibility of the Airport becoming a neighborhood. The program would serve a need a for the airport so a decision to participate was approved.
FROM THE PREZ
By Shawnie Querner
First, I want to say what a great time I had visiting with Lori Koran in Oregon! She said to be sure to pass along her good wishes to everyone. Thanks to Susan for running the meeting and wearing several hats, what with Yolanda and I gone. I understand from several of the members that the safety meeting presented by Chris Okwudibonye was informative and interesting. Understanding the different classes of air space can sometimes be overwhelming and confusing, but he presented it in such a fashion that it was easily understood. Next month the safety meeting will be presented by Woodrow Anselen.
Several new faces were seen at the last meeting, having learned of our safety meeting on different websites (i.e., the FAA website had a posting as did another website). The importance of safety in flying cannot be underestimated and we welcome anyone who wants to fly safer.
We are coming up on the AirFaire quickly and all of us need to be thinking of what positions we would like to volunteer for to make the AirFaire a success. We will need some ticket personnel at the gate about one hour prior to the start of the AirFaire to assure that we have everything ready when folks come in the gate. See any of the AirFaire committee to volunteer!
MERCHANDISE CORNER
CPA has a variety of Merchandise on hand and others that can be ordered. Items such as caps, shirts, and jackets for info contact the president. ---- We are in need of a volunteer to take over the marketing of our merchandise. This position is open and we need someone who is willing to take orders and be responsible for the merchandise. Please call Shawnie if you are willing to serve.
SWAP CORNER
This is a new feature for our members. If you have an item to sell or to swap or if you are in need of an item you think another member might be willing to part with, notify the editor and we will include it in the newsletter. ---- There are member airplanes for sale...Bob Heer's Cessna 172, and Sol Olynger's Cessna 180. Check on the bulletin board in the Corona Airventure's Pilot Lounge
AIRPORT MANAGER
Recent events: Fire claimed approximately 12 acres on Friday July 16, 2004. My thanks to the unknown pilot that called on Unicom to advise me about this incident. Cause has yet to be determined. It does appear that it may have been started by a careless smoker. We are fortunate that this blaze occurred when the wind direction was heading to the East. There is a bright to this event. I will not have to disk this area, which saves the airport money.
Security: Recently two hangars were broken into and tools were stolen. Both of these hangars were at the west end of the airport. Police were contacted and this issue is under investigation. I do have some suggestions to prevent future occurrences of this nature. If you are planning to be away for a long period of time, let me, your Master Lease Holder or your neighbor know about it. Do not park your vehicle in front of your hangar. Check some of the enhanced locking deterrents that some of your neighbors have installed. An excellent example of this can be observed at Johan Pieterse (Maule Mods) hangars. His locking system makes it very tedious and difficult for a potential thief to break into his hangars. On Friday July 23, 2004, I met with a security company to discuss ways to deter thefts at our Airport. I will be meeting with the Master Lease Holders to review these suggestions. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to stop by my office or drop a suggestion into my mail slot.
Insurance: On June 16, 2004 the City approved Ordinance number 2707 which requires that all businesses operating out of Corona Municipal Airport much provide proof of insurance which covers the minimum product liability. I have forwarded a letter to the Master Lease Holders regarding this issue. If anyone would like more information, please do not hesitate to call me or your Master Lease Holder. U.S. Army Corps. Of Engineers meeting with me scheduled for this past Thursday has been postponed to Next Thursday, July 29, 2004. Has anyone noticed that nice canopy at the BENCH? It was installed by Corona Air Ventures, LLC. My hat is off to them for this nice gesture. It really looks great! Sad note: Richard Barnes passed away this past Tuesday, July 21, 2004. Although I have only known him for a short time, it was obvious to me that he was a kind, positive and wonderful individual. My condolences to his family and friends. Fly Safe.... PILOT PROFILE
Ray Henry is our featured pilot this month. He began flying with his father at the age of 13 and was licensed in 1972. He added ratings of commercial, instrument, multi-engine and CFI in straight succession. He taught fuel systems maintenance on the B-52 and F-4 Phantom Jets in the Air Force. The first plane he owned was a Fairchild 24 with a Continental 225 HP radial engine. He later owned a Cessna 172, a Piper Tomahawk, and a Cessna 182. He borrowed aircraft from former students, which included an Archer, a 250 Comanche and a Warrior. Sounds like quite an arsenal! He hopes to have a Harmon rocket in the future and has racked up over 3000 hours. Ray has developed a program that teaches pilots and non-pilots alike how to land better and smoother, implementing Ray’s teaching and was quite and would like to do a presentation in the future on his technique. He showed my husband, Pat, how to do this in our Lancair, which comes over the fence pretty hot at about 100, touching down at around 85-90. As most of you have seen, we use the entire runway. I asked Pat to critique Ray’s technique and he told me that he found he makes much better landings after...he was impressed! Remember, you can never learn enough and every little bit of information taken into the brain remains in there until you find the need to pull it out. Thanks Ray!
NEWS YOU REALLY NEED
Dick Corcoran, long time supporter of Corona Airport, was recently hospitalized in Needles. As always, Ora was at his side. They are now home in Bullhead, AZ. If you want to keep up on the Corcorans' progress, please see Meta at the Restaurant, or Roger at SVS Hangars.
Sue Langham is recovering from bypass surgery and is doing well. Let’s all continue our support for Sue as her recovery continues. Sue has been a long time supporter of CPA and of the airport.
Cris Okutobunja at CrisAire has offered his pinch hitter course to spouses who fly. Cris offers this at no cost to CPA members, the user only has to pay for the airplane. See Cris for more details.
Don’t Forget the AIRFAIRE October 2. The Planning is underway and the time is now growing short. Much help will be needed for three days to get the show set up and to make it all happen on the 2nd so be ready to help.
Pat Keating has moved to Colorado but is going to donate some aviation books for our library. We wish to thank Pat for this generous offer.
The editor apologizes to the new advertisers in that their add will not appear in this print version. This issue is being prepared off-site and I do not have the copy with me for the new adds. This will be corrected for the next issue.
CPA Fly-INS
By Nick Nicolary
On July 17 Saturday, (8) intrepid Corona Flying Club members took their (5) Airplanes to the fly-in brunch at Gillespie Field. The weather was "July perfect" with CAFB and smooth all the way! Everyone enjoyed the Gillespie Field Cafe cuisine and indulged in lively conversation and some good hearted "clowning!” (Cheesecake pictures below...) Remember, the August Fly-in is to Santa Monica, maybe we can talk Keith Hosfiel into leading the pack since he knows the way and he has a Garmin 430.
Listed below are scheduled Fly Ins for the rest of the year.
Aug. 14-Santa Monica
Sept. 18-FoxField
Oct. 16-Santa Paula
Nov. 13-Borrego Springs

A 6 year-old was asked where his grandma lived. "Oh," he said, "She lives at the airport, and when we want her, we just go get her. Then when we're done having her visit, we just take her back to the airport." (Anybody other than me feeling a little guilty about that one ? )
