NEXT MEETING

The next meeting will be held Sunday May 2nd at 5:00 PM on the terrace at Corona Aero Partners. NOTE: THIS IS A DATE CHANGE. The normal meeting date is the second Sunday, but since the normal day falls on Mothers Day the meeting has been moved to the first Sunday so Mothers can be with their families rather than drag their men to the airport for a pilot’s meeting.  Bring food for sharing. After our meeting we will share our food and have an evening of fellowship. The drinks from the refrigerator have been furnished from leftovers from other airport events and by donations to a kitty jar in the refrigerator. Now the supply is very low. A new jar will be provided and each member should remember to put something in the jar when you take a drink from the fridge.

LAST MEETING

We continue to have good attendance at our monthly meeting. We also had four new members join our ranks so we continue to grow.  Dave Querner presented a program which might be called Wake Turbulence Part I. Dave presented an interesting talk about the importance of wake turbulence and ways to avoid them. He also gave an interesting portrayal of wake turbulence from helicopters, relating how a Thorp 18 was flipped upside down on landing from the downburst of a helicopter. The pilot, in that case, was killed as a result of a broken neck. Helicopters can provide downbursts equal to microburst and if you are caught in one, you simply cannot control the aircraft.  Part II will follow next meeting with a video presented by Woody Anselen. Be sure to attend.  Ed Hamell discussed the upcoming AirFaire and reminded members to be available to assist in putting on the show. The next meeting for the planning committee is scheduled for May 8th at 9 AM in the airport Managers office.

FROM THE PREZ --

By Shawnie Querner
The last few months have been a wonder of change for the Corona Pilot’s Association! We have two experienced pilots with years and years of flying between them working on the safety aspects of General Aviation in our community. Woodrow (Woody) Anselen provided a fantastic program last month outlining the importance of preflight checklists and possible consequences when you are not following checklists on preflight and takeoff maneuvers. The unfortunate aspect was, in the case he presented, more than 150 people had to give their lives to point out the necessity of follow through. Remember to go through your checklist!

We also have fly-ins scheduled each month, with a rain date listed for any of the dates selected. A list of the locations for breakfast or lunch will be posted in the newsletter each month. Get excited, get involved, and join us for an opportunity to mingle with your airport buddies. The stronger our bonds the stronger our association!

Remember the AirFaire, while seemingly in the distance, is rapidly approaching with each passing month. Last Years volunteers all commented on what a great time they had and what fun it was to see the excitement on the faces of the kids and parents from our community. Ed Hamell is chairing the committee this year, but without all of our help, the AirFaire will not be the success we would like it to be. This year the AirFaire is dedicated to the memory of Dave Kula. Let’s not let him down. Call Ed at (909)306-4470 to offer whatever assistance he needs. The AirFaire is sponsored by the Corona Pilot’s Association and with our members volunteering and on a good show the community gets a positive view of not only the Pilot’s Association but the airport as a whole. Let’s show them what we’ve got! Get out there and volunteer.

AIRPORT MANAGER

By Bill Cobb, Corona Airport Manager

Zhe lighting project is almost complete. The pre-final inspection was held on April 2 and the contractor is now clearing up the punch list items. Under this contract, we were able to install an emergency backup generator to power the lights should our normal power supply from Edison get interrupted . The generator has an automatic transfer switch, so the generator will automatically start and take the light load when our normal power fails. The generator will automatically start and assume the load once every twenty-eight days at 10 am, and run for thirty minutes, as a self-test feature. So don’t get excited when it automatically starts up. And, don’t you think the new LED taxiway lights look neat??

The Corona Police and Fire’s next Great Taste is coming back to our airport on June 5th. If you didn’t make it to the Great Taste here last year, you missed a real treat. They had about twenty-five restaurants that participated and brought out their best dishes for you to sample. You can go to each restaurant booth once, and you can try everyone of them. So, nobody goes away hungry. They also have soft drinks and beer and wine, but the beer and wine is not included with your admission price of $20 per adult. But the good part about it for our airport is that it brings a lot of people to our airport that didn’t even know Corona had an airport. And hopefully, some of them might take a fancy to our airport and want to start flying lessons themselves. So mark your calendars now for June 5th and attend the next annual Great Taste at the Corona Municipal Airport. They already have more than 25 restaurants signed up for this year.

As mentioned last month, the new airport manager is Richard Brodeur and he starts on May 4. I’ll have overlap with him until my last day of June 11. Richard has been the assistant airport manager at Brackett for the last eight years, so he has plenty of general aviation experience, though he is not a pilot himself. He lives out in Chino Hills and is anxious to get started, and he’ll make a fine addition to the Corona Airport. So if you get a chance, stop by the office after May 4th and meet Richard Brodeur.

And finally, the Corona AirFaire Planning Committee is still looking for volunteers for this years AirFaire which will be on Saturday, October 2nd. So, get involved and volunteer to help make this the best Corona AirFaire yet!  - - - - - - - - In the meantime, Fly Safe.  If you have any questions or suggestions---please stop by the office, call me, or email... PILOT PROFILE

By Susan Bruner

Richard Lerma is our pilot profile for this month. He has been a member of the association for about one year. Currently he owns a modified Cherokee 140 and has been flying approximately five years. He is married to Debi and they have one daughter Ashlie who is in her third year at Point Loma University, San Diego.  Richard works as a technical support manager in radiation/oncology treatment. When he is not flying he volunteers for local youth services.  Richard plans to fly in the very near future to Colorado, Northern Arizona, and New Mexico. He is not too concerned about getting his plane confiscated though others may beg to differ!  We hope Richard will volunteer to fly those wishing to get up in a plane for the first time.

Antique Aircraft Display Day We will not be able to move the display day for Antique Aircraft since we have our date published as the second Sunday of each month. Therefore we will have open house May 8th (Mothers Day). If you can’t get out to show here, you can always use some of the other show dates all around us. If you can not find the event coordinator, the sign-in book should be at the office by the fuel pit at Corona Air Ventures.

CPA Fly-INS By Nick Nicolary Nine members signed up for the April Fly-in to Santa Barbara and the morning of the 10th . It was overcast and dreary (IFR). Nevertheless, several optimistic members showed up with the hope the gloom would burn off in time to go. The weather did not improve, so most did something else. Butch and Vlada Gilliland did go IFR anyway in their Bravo and reported that the flight was great and that Santa Barbara had an 800 foot ceiling when they go there about 12:30.

At any rate, the rain date is April 17th and some of you may get this letter in time to go, so don’t miss it.  The May Fly-in is scheduled for Saturday May 15th and Kernville is the destination Look closely at the following dates and destinations.

GOOD OF THE ORDER

Aircraft without radios get light signals from Airport towers !!!

The tower gave the old Travelaire a light to taxi to the departure end of the runway. The new controller came on duty. Seeing the Travelaire, he put on his microphone and cleared him for takeoff.  The off duty controller said, "That Travelaire doesn't have a radio."  The new controller pushes the transmit button again, and says, "Travelaire without a radio, cleared for takeoff...."
