NEXT MEETING <>
The next meeting will be held Sunday March 14th at 5:00 PM on the terrace at Corona Aero Partners. Plan on showing your antique aircraft in the afternoon and then join us for our meeting and fellowship. Bring food for sharing. After our meeting we will share our food and have an evening of fellowship. Woody Anslen is putting together a program on cockpit discipline along with some statistical data as to why things happen. This is a timely subject and we look forward to this informative program. John Elwell will update new rules for antique aircraft.
LAST MEETING <>
We had well over 50 members at our last meeting. Though the room is getting a little crowded the meeting place works very well especially for aviation enthusthiasts. Dan Adams, Guest Speaker Dan Adams, the new Safety Program Manager for the Riverside GADO, was our guest speaker. Dan is former military and National Guard pilot, and is also an instructor, which provides him with a great understanding of the aviation community. Dan spoke about Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR's). TFR's have been around for a long time and were used primarily for restricting air traffic around forest fire areas. 9-11 changed all that, and new security regulations have been imposed which are important to all in the aviation community in that violations of TFR airspace provides a mandatory penalty of a sixty day suspension of airman privileges. TFR’s are issued primarily for large crowd events such as stadium or Disneyland. These usually restrict the airspace within three miles and below 3000ft agl. Presidential TFR’s however are far more restrictive and much easier to violate. These usually comprise a 30 nautical mile radius and restrict all flights. Any permitted flights must have a clearance and a discreet transponder code BEFORE departure. With this in mind pilots should keep track of where the President is going to be each day, or alternatively, be sure to get a briefing including TRS information before every flight. Helen, hold the phone.... Interest was expressed by a number of members to have a phone list available to other members. Charlie Ammar agreed to prepare such a list from our member data base. This distribution will only be to other members. If any member objects to having their phone number on this list, please notify any officer.
FROM THE PREZ -- <>
By Shawnie Querner Thanks to all of you, the Swing into Spring dinner dance was a big success. The food was excellent, the music was mellow and the fellowship was priceless. Over eighty attendees danced the evening away and won some fabulous raffle prizes. Next Years planning is already underway and we promise an even better party next year. Golden voiced Mike Nolan will help with the microphone and the raffle. Bill Simmons who sang one of his own compositions. Bill has agreed to furnish the music next year we are looking forward to his group which will play a wide variety of music. This year the committee selected a Pilot of the Year, and this years selection was Charlie Ammar. Charlie is always there to help and remember he sold over 50 tickets by himself. Kudos to Charlie, he did get his dance with Yolanda. Harry Ruscigno spent a lot of time taking pictures of our couples in their finery. These pictures should be available at our next meeting. The Pictures are $5.00 each, and the entire proceeds go to the Corona Pilots Association. Harry is donating all the rest. Thanks Harry !! Next, great big special thank you to all the committee members who worked so hard to make this evening a success. And an extra special thank you to Carol Kula -- who not only did a yeomen’s share of the work but also created most of the baskets used for the raffle, and the table decorations, and provided most of the material herself.

AIRPORT MANAGER <>
SERIOUS NOTE : On Thursday morning, Feb 19, sometime roughly between 10 and 11 am, some thoughtless individual jeopardized the very existence of Corona Airport by pouring a large quantity of gasoline out on the ground, just north of hangar 1969, between the hangar and the ultra-light trailers. One of the nearby hangar tenants smelled the gas and went to investigate. Fortunately, none of the gasoline got into the nearby storm drain and we were able to remediate the contaminated soil. But whoever poured this gasoline on the ground jeopardized the very existence of this airport. First of all, it is against all Federal and State Environmental laws. And secondly, the Army Corps and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service might look at a thoughtless action like this, which has the potential to threaten the endangered birds at and near Corona Airport, as just the thing that starts the closure of Corona Airport. Enough Said! - - - - - - - - Gate cards were to be renewed by February 28th. I am now in the process of going through the card data base and deleting all cards that were not renewed. If you did not renew your card and need to, please see me right away. If you did not renew and no longer need your card, please drop it by the airport office (mail slot in north door). - - - - - - - - The new runway lights are now operational and the contractor will soon have the taxiway lights operational and hopes to complete the entire project by mid-March. Please continue to use caution while taxiing and check the Notams. And hopefully you have noticed the fresh white paint on the runway markings, which was completed while the runway was closed at night. Thank you for your patience and understanding during construction. - - - - - - - - Please excuse the shaggy grass, but we’re saving a couple of months expenses, while we gear up the new mowing contract. Rather than have the contractor work around the lighting contractor, we did not mow during Jan & Feb. We will hopefully mow as soon as the weather and water permits. The south ditch, the west runway protection zone, and the east runway protection zone (perk ponds), have all recently been cleared or trimmed. - - - - - - - - The first round of interviews for the next airport manager were held on February 10th, and we had some really good candidates. The interview panel consisted of three current airport managers (Chino, Fullerton, and Corona). The field has been narrowed to the top three candidates who will be interviewed again in early March. - - - - - - - - In the meantime, Fly Safe. If you have any questions or suggestions---please stop by the office, call me, or email... Bill Cobb / Airport Manager 909-736-2289 bill.cobb@discovercorona.com <mailto:bill.cobb@discovercorona.com>
NEWS YOU REALLY NEED <>
AIRE FAIR 2004 ! By Ed Hammel At the February 8th meeting, a request was put out for volunteers to work on this years Corona Air Faire. Including the people who were present at the February 7th organizational meeting, we now have approximately 20 volunteers committed to making this years Fair a success. A wonderful start, but only a start. Our association now boasts a membership of over 120 members. The meeting Sunday was packed and we had several new members in attendance. If you are a new member, do not hesitate too get involved ! Do not hesitate to get involved with the Association and especially with the annual AirFaire. The Current need is for people with an interest in working on the advertising committee (no experience necessary). Additionally, Bill Cobb will be leaving on June and he heads up the committee working with the City of Corona and the FAA among other essential activities. It will take someone special to take over these tasks when Bill leaves. This is an immediate need. We need member participation for the event, no matter if is only for one hour, any time you can volunteer it will be appreciated. For those of you who are new or have not attended the monthly meetings, this years theme for the Air Faire is General Aviation-The Next Generation. The program is directed at youth involvement in aviation. It is also an opportunity to promote good will with the local non-flying community. Corona Municipal is a beautiful and well maintained airport. The Corona Pilot’s Association is a dynamic organization and as we move forward we will continue to work on programs regarding aviation safety, youth involvement, and interaction with the non flying community. Your participation in this association and especially the Air Faire should be a matter of personal pride. The Association is open to pilots and non pilots alike. You will not find a finer group of people than the active members of the CPA. Please participate at any level you desire. Attend the meetings and discover a new and revitalized association Any one interested in the association or the Air Faire Contact: Ed Hamell, Chairman ejhproductons50@AOL.com <mailto:ejhproductons50@AOL.com> or call (909) 306-4470 (cell)
