NEXT MEETING
<>
The next meeting will be held Sunday, February 8th, 2004 at the Corona Aero Partners Pilot lounge at 5PM. The program will be Roger Brownlow from the FAA. He will lead a discussion on TFRs and will provide informative handouts. Roger has a later appointment and must leave by 5:30 so we must start the meeting on time so please be on time.  Bring a dish to share, an inquisitive mind, and a fun attitude.   TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE for the "Fly into Spring Dinner and Dance" so bring your checkbook so you can get your tickets before they are gone. Remember the open house from one until five PM to show off our airplanes. Attendance verification slips will be available during the afternoon at the fueling station if you can not find the event coordinator. Bob Heer and Charlie Ammar have also been designated as event coordinators.

LAST MEETING <>
A very busy agenda was on board for the January meeting. Plans have been formalized for the FLY INTO SPRING dinner dance to be held at the Mountain View Country Club Saturday February 28th. This is the big event for the CPA as it is an annual celebration which follows the holiday season and prepares us for the year ahead. It is our chance to have a great buffet, share our good looks and dance the evening away. There will be great prizes raffled off and fun is always shared by all. Ed Hammel, chair of the Airefare 2004, gave an update on the committee work to date. Work is underway for this fall's airefare and help is needed. The next meeting of the committee is February 4th at the airport managers office. Any member who would like to be involved is welcome to attend. More information was given concerning the new requirements for the exemption of classic and antique airplanes--for the 2004 exemption it will be necessary to have a signed verification of the showing for each time the aircraft is displayed. Jonas Nablisi at the Pilot Shop has made available a number of yellow banners on a mast, which can be used to draw attention to your aircraft during the display. See Jonas or let one of the officers knows if you are interested.
DAVE KULA REMEMBERED <>
Carol Kula was present at our meeting and shared a typical Dave story, which deserves to be shared. Dave almost single handedly put on a BBQ after last year's Airefare to thank all of the workers and airport users for their support for the show. Dave bought the necessary tomatoes for the project, took them home and told Carol to slice them for hamburgers. Dave went to the airport leaving instructions for her to bring the finished product to the BBQ when she was finished. Carol has one hand that does not always work the way she wants it to, so when she finished she took the tomatoes to the airport and Dave was not very complimentary about her work. Her response was accurate and predictable "Well I don’t have a tomato slicer." Fast forward now to Christmas day in Michigan. Carol is opening gifts with her family there when her daughter placed a large box on her lap. The gift was from Dave and had been arranged before the accident. The big box contained several progressively smaller boxes until finally the gift was found and if you guessed the gift was a tomato slicer you are right and Dave continued his surprises he was so famous for. Carol has promised to slice the tomatoes for our next BBQ.  FROM THE PREZ: By Shawnie Querner (Editors note. The following tribute to Dave was inadvertently omitted from the January newsletter) In memory of David Kula We lost our leader December 7, 2003. For those of you who couldn’t attend Friday’s memorial service David was a well-loved man, hundreds of people attended. The precision missing man formation was flown by Bob Heer, Bill Meyers and Richard Barnes.  This was an unfortunate accident and loss; we must all remember that if in doubt about the weather. Don’t go!! I think sometimes we feel the weather will never get us.  Now as for David Kula, our leader, we will all miss him, his energy, devotion and spirit to our club. David was over powering at times, and we the officers had to remind him "all in good time." Time wasn’t David’s nature. He wanted our club to prosper and grow now not later. David worked tirelessly on the Aire Fair, got us speakers for our meetings to make them more interesting and educational. He organized so many aspects of our club to run more efficiently, he had a long list of plans and ideas for the club that he was working on. He was also in contact with AOPA to help preserve and protect aviation; he had so many ideas for the future of Corona Pilots Association!IB We the CPA thank David Kula for his relentless devotion.

AIRPORT MANAGER <>
SECURITY GATE CARD RENEWALS and INSURANCE VERIFICATION SET FOR JANUARY and FEBRUARY 2004  Well,2003 is gone but we all need to take just a moment and reflect on 2003, and specifically the fact that we had four aircraft crashes out of Corona Airport that resulted in seven fatalities. There is a song with words of ," …there but for the grace of God go I." But what can we learn from these fatal mishaps and what can we do to prevent these types of mishaps in the future? The Corona Pilots’ Association is undertaking a new format for their monthly safety topics and I would encourage all Corona pilots to come out and get involved with flying safety and let’s try to turn this adverse trend around. Cutting corners, not using checklists, and flying in marginal weather are bad habits that we can easily fall into. Each and every one of us should take a real close look at what we’re doing and how we’re doing it, as it relates to flying and flying safety.  The runway and taxiway lighting project is progressing well now, but it looks like it will probably be the end of February before everything is completed; however, the contractor is hoping to have the new runway lights working by early February. Please use caution when taxiing and be sure to check the NOTAMs for runway closures, as well as the flyers posted around the airport.  Hopefully you received a flyer about getting your gate card renewed during January and February. All gate cards must be renewed by the end of February. Cards that are not renewed by the end of February will be deleted from the system. When you stop by the office to renew your card be sure to bring a copy of your current aircraft insurance. Gate card renewal cost is $9 per card, with check payable to the City of Corona, or cash. So far, only about 20 percent of the cards have been renewed. Please don’t everybody wait until the last few days.  You may have heard a rumor that I am retiring. Well, it is not a rumor. I will be retiring and moving to the Outer Banks of North Carolina around the end of June. The City has already closed the job application process and received 47 applications. The 47 applications will be reviewed and narrowed down to the 10 to 15 most qualified applicants, and then there will be a series of interviews to select the most qualified applicant. Hopefully, I’ll have about a month overlap with the new airport manager to show her/him around and get them familiar with the airport, City, Army Corps, etc. In the meantime, Fly Safe.  (The following is an editorial re-print and excerpt from an earlier CPA newsletter....) Every two years, the City of Corona does a fee study on all City of Corona fees. The most recent fee study was approved by the City Council in June 2003. As approved, starting in January 2004, airport security gate cards will be $12.00 for initial purchase and annual renewals will be $9.00 per card. Everyone who has a gate card and wants to keep it active/current will need to stop by the airport office between January 6 and February 28 to renew their gate cards. All cards that are not renewed by the end of February 2004 will be deleted from the system in March 2004.  You only need a gate card if you are entering or leaving the airport during the hours of darkness. If you or your wife / partner does not need a card, and you do not want to renew it, please turn it in at the airport office. If I am not there, just slide it through the mail slot in the door. If you do want to renew your card(s), please stop by Tuesday through Saturday, 7 am to 4 PM, between January 6 and February 28, with $9.00 per card, (check to the "City of Corona" or cash). Also, when renewing your card(s), bring a copy of your current aircraft insurance, showing the City of Corona and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as "additional insured" on your policy.  If you would like to renew your gate card by mail, please mail your check($9.00 per card), payable to the City of Corona, to Corona Municipal Airport, 815 W. Sixth Street, Corona, CA 92882-3238 and include a copy of your aircraft insurance, and also state the name(s) for whose gate cards you are renewing. If you would like confirmation that your card(s) have been renewed, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. If renewing by mail, do not send in your gate card(s)!  If you have any questions or suggestions---please stop by the office, call me, or email... Bill Cobb / Airport Manager 909-736-2289
