Newsletter for January 2004

NEXT MEETING <>
The next meeting will be held Sunday January 11, 2004 at the Corona Aero Partners Pilot lounges at 5PM. Note the time change. At the December meeting there was agreement to change back to the 5pm format. The program will be Roger Brownlow who will lead a discussion on TFRs. This program was postponed to this month. Bring a dish to share, an inquisitive mind, and a fun attitude. There will be information concerning the new requirements for classic and antique airplanes and certificates required regarding the showing of you antique. Be sure to show your airplane during the afternoon.

LAST MEETING <>
The last meeting was dedicated to the memory of our president. Though it was a sad occasion it was also an uplifting experience and many members shared their thoughts about Dave Kula and the tremendous effect his dynamic leadership had given to the Corona Pilot’s Association. To those who may not be aware we lost our president and his mother in a tragic accident December 7th in Chino Hills State Park as he was returning from Long Beach. The NTSB is investigating the accident so all we know now is that we have lost a friend and that loss will leave a huge hole in the Corona Pilot’s Association. Carol has not lost her love of flying and she was present along with other members of Dave’s family to share some of his memories.  An election will be held in March for the next president and that term will run through June 2005. Dave was an enthusiastic supporter of Aviation under his leadership the organization has undergone many changes. He has increased our membership, he has greatly increased the presence of the organization on the airport, at City Hall and with regional Aviation organizations. He served as our local representative for AOPA and worked very hard for our last two Airfares. Now we need to find someone with some of the same enthusiasm and interest to succeed Dave as president. Our Vice President is not able to assume the presidential role so we need to recruit someone to fill this slot. If you are one of our newer members do not hesitate to consider being President. You will have the full support of the board and the two past presidents are very much involved in wanting to keep Dave’s momentum going. Please let any officer know of your interest before the end of February.  We are also in need of a local representative for AOPA. AOPA tries to have a local contact person at every airport as their attempt to keep a line of communication open to members and to provide assistance to local airports when we have problems.  In other business it was decided to return to the 5PM format for the monthly meetings. In the past the meetings have been held at 5 PM during standard time and at 6PM daylight saving. Later in the spring a decision will be made whether or not to make the 5 o’clock time permanent on a year round basis.  The dates for the big social event, now known as “Fly into Spring” dinner and dance are still not set but will be at the end of February or the beginning of March. More information will be available at the January meeting.  Ed Hammel, the new Airfair 2004 Chairman was present and encouraged participation by members in this process. The editor attended the organizational meeting for this activity and Ed definitely knows how to lead a successful airfaire, but he will need the support of the entire association. A few volunteers are needed to help plan the event.  Though not part of the program, a visitor gave a demonstration of a new aircraft design as well as a new construction material that is very nearly flame resistant. To those who saw the demonstration we were impressed.

AIRPORT MANAGER <>
SECURITY GATE CARD RENEWALS and INSURANCE VERIFICATION SET FOR JANUARY and FEBRUARY 2004  Every two years, the City of Corona does a fee study on all City of Corona fees. The most recent fee study was approved by the City Council in June 2003. As approved, starting in January 2004, airport security gate cards will be $12.00 for initial purchase and annual renewals will be $9.00 per card. Everyone who has a gate card and wants to keep it active/current will need to stop by the airport office between January 6 and February 28 to renew their gate cards. All cards that are not renewed by the end of February 2004 will be deleted from the system in March 2004.  You only need a gate card if you are entering or leaving the airport during the hours of darkness. If you or your wife / partner does not need a card, and you do not want to renew it, please turn it in at the airport office. If I am not there, just slide it through the mail slot in the door. If you do want to renew your card(s), please stop by Tuesday through Saturday, 7 am to 4 PM, between January 6 and February 28, with $9.00 per card, (check to the "City of Corona" or cash). Also, when renewing your card(s), bring a copy of your current aircraft insurance, showing the City of Corona and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as "additional insured" on your policy.  If you would like to renew your gate card by mail, please mail your check($9.00 per card), payable to the City of Corona, to Corona Municipal Airport, 815 W. Sixth Street, Corona, CA 92882-3238 and include a copy of your aircraft insurance, and also state the name(s) for whose gate cards you are renewing. If you would like confirmation that your card(s) have been renewed, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. If renewing by mail, do not send in your gate card(s)!  On the bright side, airport thefts have diminished considerably due to the following: 1) gate card system 2) security surveillance cameras 3) police use of airport office for zone substation, and 4) police helicopter operations with HeliFlite.  If you have any questions or suggestions---please stop by the office, call me, or email... NEWS YOU REALLY NEED <>
Classic Aircraft Display
The California legislature in 2003 passed a new requirement for the exemption of personal tax on aircraft 35years old or older. The new requirement is that a certificate signed by the event coordinator will be required for each display claimed by the owner. For the year 2003 Riverside County will accept a certificate signed by the airport Manager of the event coordinator that the aircraft was displayed twelve times during 2003. CPA has prepared the certificates that we believe will satisfy the county. If you have displayed your aircraft at the CPA open houses during the year you can get a certificate at the January meeting or from the editor. For the year 2004 and beyond a certificate will be required for each event you claim.

Airport Construction The lighting replacement is underway but behind schedule. It appears that the nightly runway closures from 7 PM until 5AM will likely occur during the middle of January. As previously reported the contractor is based in Big Bear and the wildfires caused a significant delay in all of his work.

Good of the Order: A student became lost during a solo-cross-country flight. While attempting to locate the aircraft on radar ATC asked, “What was your last known position?” The student replied “When I was number one for takeoff."
